I'm okay with Carle staying but he is what he is and he is a turnover machine. He has so many of his shots blocked because he wrists everything from the point. He's a third pairing defenseman and PP specialist at best. IMO he gets too much ice time

The facts say that he isn't a turnover machine. And how can he be a PP specialist when the majority of his points are scored at Even Strength? He even led the NHL in Even Strength points for defenseman in 11/12. It seems as though you don't have your fact straight. And a wrist shot from the point can be, and is a very effective play. And he's clearly not a 3rd pair defenseman. And you know what, If Pronger was around, Carle's ice time would have been a little less. But that goes for everyone. That being said, Carle who played a good portion of the year with Bourdon, stepped up and helped with the loss of Pronger.

I get that....but prongers salary would have to be paid....as for briere....you have put me on notice before re: briere not going anywhere...but I was trying to show the front loaded contracts in the later years and how they could be attractive to the bottom feeders to get to the cap floor....

He's only paid 30.5M the first 4 years. And 20.5M the last 5 years.

I don't understand why anyone one would want to trade Briere. Point per game in the playoff guys just don't grow on trees....
- Jimmygrazz

To some people that's negated by the fact he is on the ice for so many goals against with such a high cap hit.

I think the author of the blog pretty much debunked your assessment of Carle being a turnover machine. Yes he has a lot of his shots blocked however he also manages to get several assists. I can't see how you can say he's a third pairing dman when on a team that got within two wins of a cup he was a first pairing guy.

I apologize. I guess I'll have to check with you first before I form an opinion the next time. Clearly you are the only true expert of the subject. To me it SEEMS like he is a turnover machine because it SEEMS like when the pressure is on and the game is important he's blindly passing the puck around the boards or in the middle of the ice. Statistics can be misleading, but it SEEMS to me he makes a lot of unforced turnovers.

I think he's okay and a puck moving defenseman. I don't think he's great is all I'm saying. Given the alternatives I dont see anyone else as a suitable replacement either. And I think he gets tired from all the ice time.

Frankly I'd like to see him wind up and take some harder shots from the point I think the wrist shots are weak. He has a good shot when he uses it.

Do you think the stats guy just turns a blind eye every time Carle makes these repeated turnovers every time he's under pressure? And ask yourself a simple question. Why does the Coaching staff play him so much if he's just blindly passing the puck up the middle of the ice all the time?
Look, Carle isn't mistake free. He makes his share of mistakes, like any defenseman not named Lidstrom, Chara, and any of the Elite defenseman. Of which Carle is certainly not. He's not even as good as far as lack of turnovers go, as Timonen on his own team is. But he is reliable, and he does handle the puck well and limits the mistakes he makes under pressure. And the stats bear that out.

There is no indication whatsoever that Carle get's tired. Would it be more ideal for Carle to play close to 10 minutes a game, versus 25? Certainly. But with Pronger and Meszaros hurt, and needing to limit Timonen, he's been asked to do a little more. And he's done that well.
And I don't think anyone, myself included would use the word great in describing Carle.

Honestly, no Carle doesn't really have a good shot. That is a weakness. And why he's not a PP specialist as you attributed him to be in an earlier post.

How you can justify it is simple.

Who do you get to replace him that will cost less? There's not a UFA out there that accomplishes that. Most of the guys you could mention as trade targets will cost close to that and will require major assets in return.

Younger players that have smaller deals because they haven't hit UFA paydays yet will cost you a huge price in assets traded. Then in a year or two, you'll be paying them $5mm a year.

The UFA market is not deep. Suter could command a massive deal. Wideman isn't as good as Carle all around. Oduya re-signed. Garrison is likely to see a big deal, especially if Suter signs early.

So the choices are: Overpay a UFA, Overpay for a kid in trade and have to hand him a big raise in a year or two, or trade for a guy who is similar in age to Carle, making similar cash, and give up assets to do so.

Keeping Carle seems like a no brainer then

- Jsaquella

Resigning Carle IS definitely a no brainer considering he isn't asking top dollar. This is huge for the Flyers. Ink him up for next season and see what Timonen wants to do (Will he retire?)

Didn't get to post yesterday but I am still leaning towards the Flyers not resigning Jagr. If the players really want him back, sigh ok I guess I would just hope he doesn't get a raise or its minimal (3.5). For all the praise he gets about being a team player and such the thing I'm disturbed about is his unwillingness to move off the top line. He shouldn't have that kind of authority. You want to play for the Flyers or for Giroux? I'm guessing the extra $1.5 in cap ceiling from what Holmgren thought was going to be $69 mil may play into the Flyers decision.

Damn are there going to be a heap of overpaid free agents this summer. I suppose we should be happy were getting Carle and Jagr back at reasonable hits.

No it's 30.5M in the first 4 years. All a signing bonus is, is money paid up front, not in addition to his salary. As an example, his first year salary is 10M, with 5M of it paid up front. He's not getting 15M his first year.
