It's not a matter of him screwing the Flyers. It was a discussion of whether or not Pronger's contract could be dealt to a team that wanted dead cap space to reach the salary floor.

I have little doubt that if no changes to the over 35 provisions of the CBA are made, or if made and exclude guys like Pronger, that he'll stay on LTIR for the duration of his contract and retire like Ian Laperriere is expected to after the Final.

Also, LTIR DOES kind of screw the Flyers. They have to count for his salary this summer when considering FA's and trades

Unsurprisingly, forward Ian Laperriere is ready to officially hang 'em up for good.

Canoe.ca reports (en francais) the 38-year-old member of the Philadelphia Flyers intends to announce his retirement once the Stanley Cup Final is over.

After sustaining a nasty head injury in spring 2010, Laperriere was never expected to play again. However, to avoid making a dent to the Flyers' salary cap, he's remained on the club's LTIR. Retiring early would've seen an average salary of $1.167 million count against the cap, because Laperriere signed his last contract as a 35-year-old (as per CBA rules).

Instead, the popular figures has been hanging around the team, occasionally serving as coach to younger lads like Matt Read and Zac Rinaldo.

Fortunately, Laperriere claims he's capable of having a normal life -- "capable d'avoir une vie normale" -- just not one that involves playing hockey in the NHL.

I think that Couturier is a deal breaker. Especially when you consider that it would be a package...I can't see the Flyers trading Couturier, even in a Weber deal.

The way Coots was able to match-up against Malkin in the playoffs, G and Coots for the next decade as the two top centers -wow. I would like to keep Schenn also, but if he has to go in a trade for Weber, then I'd let Schenn go.

Obviously, you're missing what I'm saying. I understand that Pronger counts against the cap if he retires. I also understand LTIR and that the Flyers get cap relief from Pronger being on LTIR.

However, that has absolutely ZERO bearing on the conversation. The conversation was about potentially trading Pronger to a team that needed to reach the cap floor.

In that case, Pronger could go to another team that needed to reach the floor, count his $4.91mm cap hit to their cap total, and get paid by insurance, rather than the team that held his contract.

The reason behind this discussion was to clear room for off-season moves. During the off season, Pronger's salary will count against the Flyers cap. Teams can go over the cap by 10% in the off season, but all one way contracts, like Pronger, Laperriere and Matt Walker count against the cap.

If Pronger was traded, and not placed on LTIR(rather placed on the IR) by his new team, he still gets paid by insurance, the new team gets to reach the cap floor without having to spend the money and the Flyers not only get Pronger off their books and off season cap, they get an open contract slot.

Do you think the league would allow him to be traded? Wouldn't he have to pass a physical? I personally like the idea just not sure if its possible.

Man, even ex-Phils get hit with injuries.

Kevin Millwood had a no hitter through 7 innings. Had to leave game with injury

The Phillies are going to take a step backwards. Trade whatever assets you have and stockpile new talent. Free up some money as well.

The NHL could step in, however, there are past instances of injured players being traded. Basically, as long as all injuries are disclosed, and accepted as such by the teams involved, the trade gets allowed.

There will be plenty of teams looking to add pieces and the Phils have plenty to deal. At this point there is no one who is untouchable. I dont see Hamels resigning here and I think they could get a ton in return for him.

Who has value, besides Victorino and Ruiz? Obviously they could move Hamels, but that's a white flag on the season

Do you think this is possible? Will the Flyers look into doing this or will they just LTIR Pronger for the next five years?

I think he'll be LTIR'd. He could also be bought out if there's an amnesty clause.

My guess is the Flyers press hard for changes to the over 35 rules and have them apply to existing over 35 deals, allowing him to retire if he wants.

As far as trading him, why poke the NHL? If the NHL sees it as cap circumvention, it could get other teams pissed at the Flyers. It's not worth it.

Lee, Halladay, Pence, Rollins, Polanco, Blanton and Worley. Teams are always looking to improve. Each player has different value. We may think these guys are done but I seen worse players get traded before the deadline.

The new CBA needs to address this issue. Its a career ending injury and the team shouldnt be penalized for it. I see nothing wrong with allowing the player to retire and get paid but also allowing his cap hit to come off.

Halladay & Polanco are hurt, so not much market for them now. Trading others sends up a white flag. I understand and agree with the taking a step back to move forward, but the Phillies don't seem inclined

Will see. They are not going to make the playoffs even when they get everyone back. The division is tough and the other teams are much better at this point. The Phillies need to make the move. Polanco will be back (out for 5 games). Halladay will be back in time before the deadline and teams would be all over him (his track record speaks for itself).

The later he gets traded the better. Its less money for a team to pay him. Their are plenty of teams looking for pitching depth.

I understand the logic behind the rule. I'd rather see them limit all contract to over 35 guys to 3 years max.

I think thats the plan but honestly I think Hamels is going to sign elsewhere. The Phillies are not going to commit that kind of cash to him. Hes very good but the Phillies are in a rebuilding mode. Hamels is young at 27 but I dont think they want to commit to that long term deal. Pitchers are high risk. Tough situation but I would deal him and load up with prospects. Hes your best trade chip at this point.
