And if we went through all 30 teams you would find many with holdovers promoted from the AHL to be assistants or someone's predecessors.

Randy Carlyle is up in Toronto with Scott Gordon and Greg Cronin as Ron (I got my contract extension for Christmas) Wilson was fired, he was allowed to bring Dave Farrish with him.

Hey there's Ken Hitchcock up for coach of the year with ex Islander assistant Brad Shaw who's been in St Louis since 2006 and Ray Bennett another assistant coach since 2006 as the Blues fired Andy Murray and other coaches.

http://blues.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=63460

Oh what a shock, there's Darryl Sutter's staff, John Stevens hired in 2010, and their other assistant named Jamie Kompon assistant coach since 2006 through many coaching and gm changes in LA.
http://kings.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=40766

Look at all those holdovers in Minnesota for new coach Mike Yeo as his team went from first in December to worst.
http://wild.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=76589

But of course for the hate club, all they want to do create their own history, and have no clue the Isles are doing what many teams are.

Once again, dodging the question and posting nonsense and red herrings to try to defend the team's management. The issue is not whether an AHL coach is qualified to be an assistant or NHL head coach. You need to read the threads more carefully. The issue is whether or not the vast majority of NHL GM's decide unilaterally to hire assistant coaches or do they let their coaches pick their own assistants.

You posted nonsense about three first year coaches, two of which were hired mid-season, to try to show that assistants are held over. Congratulations. That still doesn't address the issue of whether or not any of those three coaches were ever consulted about whether or not they wanted to retain who was already in place as assistants or if they wanted their own people.

Read somewhere late last night that Nail had not one but two concussions this past season. Not sure how credible the info was. But I wouldnt be surprised if Edmonton passes on him or trades down.

I would... they are projecting this kid to be something special... If he & JT were in the same draft JT would be going second.

If that info is true, I could see Edmonton being cautious. I could be wrong since I don't follow the Oilers much, but I believe they've had some issues with skilled forwards being injured a lot in the recent past (the generation of forwards they drafted before the Eberle/Hall/RNH generation). And if they don't take Nail, they'll probably take Murray.

I'll probably follow the Oilers more closely this season. I always try to pick a Western Conference team that seems to share the Isles' hard luck. For a while it was Phoenix...they had a developing prospect pool, bad results in the standings, and even arena/relocation issues. But now it's hard to relate to a team that went to the conference finals, so I'm in search of a new team.

Stick with Phoenix, they wont even make the playoffs next year.

Recently read that he's not even in Hall's class. Now I have to admit. I havent seen much of Taylor Hall so I'm not about to comment on his class but the latest reviews I'm reading are not putting Nail in any kind of elite class.

I'll try and go back to find some of the reviews and blogs. I read them late last night so I cant promise anything.

And if its true that the kid has had 2 concussions already. I'd be very reluctant to take him @ #1 oe #2. But hey that's just me.

i didnt say they were on par or that Yak was better...

If the 2 were drafted the same year, Nail would go first.

That would kind of insinuate that he is better, no? JT would go #1 over him easily. Aside from being a vastly better player, centers are way more valuable.

You are going by what you know about JT NOW... not prior to a draft...

Nail has had the generational tag placed on him by many scouts, JT never was even considered.

From Draftsite.com

Nail Yakupov RW Sarnia (OHL) 5' 10" 175
DraftSite's comments: Oiler's GM Steve Tambellini comes into the draft with an unprecedented third chance to draft first overall. His team would love to see that consensus number one player being a back-liner, but Nail Yakupov simply stands alone as the best player. Granted, he is not a player who will impact an NHL roster like Stamkos, Ovechkin, or even Taylor Hall did, but Yakupov will help generate offense early on. The fact remains that the Oilers would really like to plug and play a younger defender, whether he be a draftee, or someone already getting on-the-job training on another NHL team. (Pick possibly in play?)

HockeysFuture.com

1. Nail Yakupov, RW, Sarnia Sting

Yakupov is an elite goal scorer who will be a welcome addition to any roster. He's proven all year not only that he is a superlative goal scorer, but that he can do so consistently when he's in the lineup.

In addition to great hands, Yakupov may be the best skater in the draft. The one knock on him is that he's more of a pure finisher than an overall offensive talent. He needs to work on involving his teammates more and setting up plays.

In the end, Yakupov should perform well at the NHL level. He's drawn comparisons to Pavel Bure — and while he's not likely to meet those lofty expectations, he should be an excellent NHL player one day.

Well I cant seem to find the article's that I read last night that brought Nail down a notch. And I sure for every article that has Nail projected as Human, there will others that say he's super human.

Whether he turns into JT, Sidney Crosby, Pavel Bure or Scott Sissions. (did I spell that right?) Remains to be seen.

All I know is that I've read that he's a heck of a prospect. But Not in the SuperStar class and that he's susceptible to injury.

But hey what do I know?

As with every 18 yr old prospect. Its a lot of speculation and luck.

Perhaps you need to read the threads more carefully.

I answered the question perfectly because the issue was not about if AHL coaches are qualified, but in a limited look I went through many NHL teams to see if assistant coaches were retained long-term regardless of coaching or gm changes and they are.

Former Assistant Coach Gerard Gallant was re-assigned as a special consultant to GM Garth Snow and later said he was not happy as an Islanders assistant so he stayed home.

What's a red herring for you is the Isles are doing what the Devils and many teams have and are doing.

We will never know what goes on internally to the degree if a coach is consulted about retaining his assistants when many have been there before the gm in many cases.

We also do not know the tenure of Scott Allen or Dean Chynoweth in terms of their contracts. People loosely throw around the term fired, which would mean Wang has to pay them not to work.

It could be their contract's were up. We have no idea if Capuano was asked or if he had assistants he wanted on his staff.

Capuano and Dan Bylsma were hired here within a week of one another to work under Steve Stirling in 2005 a full year after he was head coach in 2003-04:

Bylsma began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06.

Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WBS before being promoted to Pittsburgh.

His former assistant in WBS Todd Reirdon was promoted to assistant coach but the third coach in Pittsburgh is Tony Granato.

Bottom line Capuano like many AHL assistants turned NHL coaches do not have a lot of assistants to draw on.

Not like Wang has been shy about paying Islander coaches to go home.

Good question. I guess I'm guilty of thinking out loud. And Since I didnt come up with the articles I was looking for. I'm kind of left in limbo.

I was completely sold on Nail several months ago. But After the injuries, concussion/concussions and a few negative reports, I soured a bit.

After reading several articles yesterday that have once again compared this kid to OV and Bure. And a few others who call him an Elite prospect who is far and away the best of the lot and a Franchise Player. I'm somewhat confused.

If Nail is as good as his supporters say he is. And Edmonton is willing to make a deal. Then Snow should do what ever it takes short of offering JT to acquire him. Because if Edmonton is willing. Then someone is gonna make the deal. It might as well be us. It would be nice to have a dynamic duo to compare to Hall and RNH or maybe even Crosby, Malkin.

But thats a big IF!
