There are 30 teams in the NHL. So far, Uncle Lou (track record of success) and Snow (no track record for success) have been the only 2 GM's identified that hire the assistant coaches. The other 28 teams?

I'll tell you what: when Snow gets to four Cup finals and wins three of them, he can hire all the assistant coaches he wants to with no input from the coach and no complaints from me.

- Jethro09

And if we went through all 30 teams you would find many with holdovers promoted from the AHL to be assistants or someone's predecessors.

Randy Carlyle is up in Toronto with Scott Gordon and Greg Cronin as Ron (I got my contract extension for Christmas) Wilson was fired, he was allowed to bring Dave Farrish with him.

Hey there's Ken Hitchcock up for coach of the year with ex Islander assistant Brad Shaw who's been in St Louis since 2006 and Ray Bennett another assistant coach since 2006 as the Blues fired Andy Murray and other coaches.

http://blues.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=63460

Oh what a shock, there's Darryl Sutter's staff, John Stevens hired in 2010, and their other assistant named Jamie Kompon assistant coach since 2006 through many coaching and gm changes in LA.
http://kings.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=40766

Look at all those holdovers in Minnesota for new coach Mike Yeo as his team went from first in December to worst.

But of course for the hate club, all they want to do create their own history, and have no clue the Isles are doing what many teams are.

Who do you think the Islanders will draft? I personally think they should grab Murray, Grigorenko or Dumba, but I'm always wrong when it comes to predicting these things. last year I said they were going to draft Hamilton and in 2010 I said Fowler or Skinner.

I'm pulling for Murray. I think he's the player that's going to fall like Fowler did because teams fall in love with flashy forward prospects. Hopefully the Isles recognize that while they do have defensive prospects in the system, Murray would likely top them all if they draft him.

Isn't it crazy how their farm team is rough and tumble yet they don't protect their million dollar assets up in the NHL.

To be fair Vukota Bridgeport has the better team.

I hope it's Murray. I like the idea of many years of Murray and Hammer together.

Botta hates the Isles mgmt and will do anything and everything to make them look foolish. I refuse to get upset over an Assistant coaching change. Everyone on here hates Capuano anyway.. If it was his idea everyone would be just as negative on the guy. This is a non event.... period.
- niteislander

He doesn't have to try to hard to find things to criticize. Snow keeps lobbing underhanders to him.

I like Murray and Hamonic as a first pair. But, Grigorenko is very interesting to me. In 4 years I think Grigorenko will be the best player from this draft. He'd look good on the Power play instead of Nielson.

Isles management makes themselves look foolish without any help from Botta(who is an ass clown himself). Capuano is a jackass who was hired by an even bigger jackass who continues to make more jackass decisions, it never ends

Saw this coming since last year. If CAppy was going to be fires this clown would come in and coach. He is cheap with no NHL experience behind the bench the type of coach the Islanders love. I swear it is like management wants this team to fail every year. Mark my words if Cappy gets fired during the year then Thompson is your new head coach. He will look good like Cappy for a few months and then be hired as the permanent coach for a couple of years. Where have we seen thsi script before???
- kasperrko

Well he made the playoffs in one year of coaching in the AHL(and no where else) of course he is ready for the big time

I hear u.. but he just seems like a woman scorned with everything he writes on Mgmt. They fired me and took my credentials away.. .waaaaaaaaahhhh.

I have said this before .. any move the Isles make no matter how big or small is villified by everyone. I remember when they signed Moulson how much crap Garth got for it b/c we got no one and the Rangers signed Redden and Drury.

This is an assistant coach.. why does anyone even care. A bench coach.. who cares.

- niteislander

Why do I care? I care because these guys coach a team that we are all fans of. Why don't you care? I respect your opinion but sometimes it seems you just say stuff to blindly defend Snow? Its an important job and leaves a hole in Bridgeport in the process. I have a hard time understanding why you don't think this is a big deal with the shape this team is in.

Instead of everyone being so pessimistic I actually like the idea of bring Thompson up...

He got the best out of the team in BPT - no reason to think he couldn't do that with the NYI. Cappy is a player's coach, Thompson will add some fuel to the fire. He seems to be very demanding of his players and pushes them. I think Cappy and Thompson will make a great coaching duo.

I don't see the purpose is bashing this idea...we haven't even given Cappy and Thompson a chance to prove themselves and everyone is down on it.

Sometimes the people who write here are absolute hypocrites - you want change and when it happens you go wild on Garth. I think this move is for the better - Cappy will do better as a coach, Weight is manning a PP that performed well last year and Thompson comes in after a successful year and becomes the NYI's assistant coach.

Think about this too...the following 2011-12 BPT players will most likely be playing on the NYI on opening night - Cizikas, Ullstrom, Donovan/deHaan, and possibly Rhakshani on the 4th line. Thompson coached them all last year...it'll make them more comfortable in the NHL and he knows how to get ther best out of each of them from last year.

- kcNYI

Cappy isn't a players coach, he's not even a god damn coach. He's just some fat moron that was given a job that couldn't even win in the AHL.

OK so the team is not going to pull off any blockbuster trades for NHL vets or sign big name FA's. Snow is building from within and anticipates promoting some of the BRI players to the Island and Thompson has coached and knows them. True Cappy is a "yes" guy but chances are he would not be coaching any other NHL team except the Isles, so it all fits. I also think Cappy was a bit emotionally burned out at the end of the season so Thompson may have more emotional drive than Cappy or his previous assistants.

Although Thompson did not have a great playoff run with BRI, they did put together a nice streak during the season, so if they can recreate that here on the Island it will build interest and fan turnout.

Weight is already well off financially as a retired NHL star and a stint as the BRI coach would work nicely for him since he still loves hockey more than he needs the money so he would work for a fair price.

i certainly would, doesnt mean id get that opportunity....

if you were a coach and your job was on the line BUT your boss wouldnt let you pick your own assistants, would you make a big deal about not having your own assistants knowing that if this job doesnt work out you may never sniff a hockey coaching job again?

That's also Charles Wang's AHL team so when you make ridiculous notions Wang does not want fighters because they may cost him money in fines/suspensions that also applies to the AHL.

Oh yes, Brent Thompson was suspended by the AHL for the first three games of next season.

- NYI

So.... It's fair to say we can blame Snow for this disgraceful team?

Guys, ur not gonna believe this, but I figured to tell.....
2nite the Islanders had a meeting with fans an a Q&A with Snow....
from 6pm-7:30, so about 50+ ppl i think showed up
Anyhow, funny thing was, how weak the questions were to Snow, but besides that, how he skirted around with some of his answers, geez what a joke....

Only sad thing to point out is, he emphasized on how deep the Islanders prospect pool is, an how this team an players are only gonna succeed, by how they mature in the NHL. that response made me laugh to a point, that unfortunately this process will take another 5yrs

One person asked a question of toughness or lack there of, an this dope of a GM said they are tough, we had Matt Martin lead the league in hits.......
wow, thats all i can say,
