If leafs acquire luongo cheaply with komi+ and sign justin schultz this summer. Our back end is practically stacked.

Phaneuf Schenn

Gardiner Schultz

Liles Franson

Luongo
Reimer/Scrivens

leaving both holzer and gunner expendable to trade for forwards, or since franson has more value trade franson and gunner for forwards and sub holzer in the lineup pairing with Liles.

Better start saying its a 'top 5 defense in the NHL'

I remember hearing that for a while and I remember how it turned out.

Your missing something here.....ah, no first line centre and the need for about 3 decent large wingers, to chip the puck out of our end. You can have all of the defence that you want, but if you can't get the puck out, you aren't going to win.
- PrinceLH

Yeah, but a decent back end is key, and I think we will go into next season with 1 more elite forward added to our roster.

Hope without Wilson will have a defense that actually plays defence.

Thats true but that takes time to acquire for forwards. You start from goalie and work yourself up. We solidify our goalies and defence. Burke can start trading guys like gunnerson and franson for top forwards.

Big winger available: Chris Stewart

OK, say we get Loungo, he is 33. We have a work stoppage and we lose another season. Loungo comes back and he's 35. He loses what edge that he has left and we are stuck with 8 more years of an obsolete player. Why waste it on this guy? Stay the course with our own young goaltenders, save the Cap, grab a goaltender, maybe Subban, in the 2nd round and go from there.

because were not a rebuilding team anymore. Its a mix of acquiring top players with a mix of prospects and youth to play in the NHL. Luongo will not lose his edge, he has been a top elite goalie for the longest time. Has brodeur lost his edge? He lost it and then regained his edge. If we were to get a young goalie id go after John Bernier but once again as mike in buffalo said, they are unproven, unproven just like ben scrivens and james reimer.

EDIT: and luongo will come cheap

I hope the new Oilers coach is Scotty Bowman. I heard he's good today.

But really now, buddy has Schenn in the top pairing, and a rookie and sophomore as the 2nd pairing.

That's gonna dominate?

Carlyle better have some friggen system he's gonna teach.

I still like you.

Name one that went on for two years! They may miss a couple of months, but that's it. Lu just turned 33. Meaning he'll be 33 all of next season and 34 all of the following season and so on and so forth...

Because schenn should be able to be in the top pairing? Im pretty sure gardiner and schultz would be one the same line up first off. And if gunner and franson are to be traded to help upfront and holzer is brought to fill in one gap, im sure it wont be the first line. Thus

Phaneuf Schenn

Gardiner Schultz

Liles Holzer

EDIT: but in my opinion, itd be better off to trade just one of franson or gunner

Aside from the fact the Schenn was a bottom pairing dman last year, and a bad one at that, I don't see any problems with him being a top pairing dman.

1st pairing cant move left or right going to fast, they are slow as (frank). 2nd pairing a sophomore and a rookie.., the third pairing would probably be our best and it has a rookie on it.

Being drafted as 1st Rounder and as a shut down D-man, its time he starts learning to be a top defender in the league under carlyle's system. Phaneuf and schenn on the same line... thats one tough line haha

Phaneuf is slow, schenn is not that bad. He made some good comebacks to save plays the previous season. And why are you judging our defence... dont you guys need defence
