Why bother? The guy gets no PP time and plays with Cooke and Kennedy. If people want to value him based on points take that into consideration. He's a 2nd line center on 28 teams in this league and a first on a handful. - canadianpenfan
False.
Staal got the 2nd most PP time of any Penguins center this year, effectively making him the 2nd PP wave's designated centerman. He also obviously has the most time played on the PK.
He has the 2nd most icetime overall for centers, another evidence pointing to his 2nd line center role with the penguins, as opposed to the 3rd line role people seemed so obsessed about. |

I'm talking over his career, not just last year. If you want to only look at last year he was close to a PPG player. |

If that deal was on the table P Burg would have jumped all over it. Granted it's not the typ of D man they need but They could flip the pics alone for a shutdown guy. Staal is a very good second line center and a great 3rd line. Yandle is way underrated. Yandle for Staal stright up would be fair let alone the picks thrown in. |

Staal is a lot better than most people realize. As a laughs fan I'de do whatever to put him between Lupsell, would be a killer line, plus he's one of the best Pkers in the League - very underated player in Pitt. |

You're telling me Derek Roy, Kyle Turris, Vinny Lecavalier, Brooks Laich, and Bryan Little are better than Staal? And Just because he's a third line center on deep teams like Boston doesn't mean he's a third liner. Also many teams would accomodate him in their top 6. The Devils would probably move henrique to the wing. I think Vancouver would try to get him in their top 6. Detroit and Colorado the same. At this point I would rather have Staal than Mike Richards. |

Last year and the year before that as well.
If you read back you'll see i've never made the argument that he wasnt a good player, as a matter of fact i've explicitely stated that he is, in my opinion, a great 2nd line center.
What's for sure is that he hasnt been getting 3rd line minutes ever since Crosby got injured and therefore it makes no sense to call him a 3rd line center or to say he "produced that much with 3rd line minutes".
Yet, you yourself said he was playing with Kennedy and Cooke right on last page... |

the rangers need more scoring depth, but what does callahan have to do with j.staal? nothing.
- tomburton99
Well they have similar point production and play a similar game, yet Staal is a third liner is my point. |

Wow that is pretty bold- Richards is a playoff performer... and a solid one at that... most teams would kill for Richards come cup time... |

Bad deal for the pens. They don't need another offensive D! They need good, scoring, big, 2-way players...ie they NEED more Staal-like players! Ideally he moves up to second line and either Crosby or Malkin is on the wing permanently. Trade Martin for cap space, Kennedy for a guy like Doug Murray and the situation is solved.

Staal's not too shabby himself. He was big on the Pens cup run, looked good this year, and I think he'll be a better offensive producer than Richards. Couldn't go wrong with either one. |

How's that going to happen when Getzlaf, Nash and Luongo are all going to Toronto? Surely Schenn and Kulemin would have already been involved in one of those other obvious deals that will surely happen. - Juice
