Price to Edm for Nail
Luongo to Mtl for 5 lbs of Schwartz's smoke meat.

- VANTEL

Y'know, Luongo is still one of the best 10 goalies in the league. Even his biggest haters would have him in the top 15 (if they were being halfway reasonable). For sure he has looked unexpectedly shaky in a few big games in Vancouver, but you've gotta remember what Canucks fans do to their goaltenders. Put it this way - I predict Schneider's popularity will drop greatly in a few years, and the same fans who spent the last couple years clamoring to be rid of Luongo will be riding the Lack bandwagon instead of the Schneider one.
Your franchise could have rode Luongo through the playoffs - or they could have gone back to him. Schneider was amazing, but he also proved beyond a doubt that the Canucks weren't losing because of their goaltending - they were losing because of their team. And their coaching. Especially their coaching. How do you be so dominant over a 3 year period and look so unprepared for the games that matter?
AV's decision to give up on Lu has put the franchise in a position where you will have to lose a very, very talented player for no comparable return. You guys have lots of organizational depth, but make no mistake, this (and the Hodgson trade) have set your franchise back and narrowed your window for Cup victories.
I can't wait to see Luongo in the playoffs against the Canucks. Anyone else feeling that way?

During the CBC Hotstove lastnight, it was interesting to hear the panel and most notably Glenn Healey adamantly state the Oilers HAVE to trade the pick; stammering on about not being able to have or keep all those stars/ star potential and that the Oilers really do want Murray - et cetera.

He's a blow hard indeed but I do wonder if Oiler brass' really do hope for the right offer.

This draft can't come fast enough.

Pick Nail. Deal from a position of strength later if you have too.

lmfao it's a frosty friday in Jersey when I'm taking my hockey gossip from Glenn "at least I'm not McGuire" Healey. The man is every bit as good of an analyst as he was a goaltender. Ohhhhhh, snap.
btw +1 on the whole "draft Nail" thing. Our timetable to win the Cup is in 2 or 3 years. No point overpaying for an elite D-man we don't need yet, because lots of unexpected things could happen in 2 or 3 years that could render that trade unnecessary or make it much cheaper.
I'm looking forward to having 4 players vying for the Hart

If we want Murray, the only team we should trade with is Columbus.

Healey is kind of a zorch. We could afford those guys, or we could draft Yak, let him play a year or two and then trade one of the big 4 (if need be) for a defensive stud.

I wish Columbus had won the lotto though. I think I would have rather drafted Murray and not have to worry about passing on Yakupov (a guy who may be one of the top scorers in the league)

- laughs2907

I feel the same way somewhat. We could have just taken our medicine and picked whoever at 2 between the consensus guys ranked in that spot. One of Murray, Grigorenko, or Galchenyuk would have been great, and there probably wouldn't have been much backlash either way.

Picking #1 and getting Nail is great, but Tambellini has never had the stones to say, trade it for a young top pairing defenseman or something along the lines of that.

I think it's more 4 or 5 years to compete for the Cup, 2 or 3 to make the playoffs and/or win a round or two.

Said this immediately after i heard the Oil won the lotto... Worst thing to have happened.

I do not think Edm NEEDS to trade the pick...I think they WILL take the player because most teams wont offer what they WANT. This is why I agree on some of the trade proposals that I have commented on. Edm will not win the SKILL proportion of the trade but they can fill spots they need filled with players/prospects of HIGH QUALITY.

Nail will be an outstanding player, better than anyone else we can get from this draft (maybe 1-3 may be close) but he is SOoooo not what the team needs.

Ya it's funny how a lot of sentiment revolves around this sort of strange position the Oilers are in. Fukked up hockey god minutia.

I know I'm tired of mulling it over for sure, so I get to the point where I too just wish Columbus would have won it.

BUT - as we've seen in so many drafts - even the first d-man taken is at times not even the best d-man in the first two rounds.
So with that, I'm stoked for Nail over the elusive D-man. poop we'd all be climbing up the walls over Reinhart/ Dumba/ Murray in that case.

They'll figure out the D later.

D shouldn't be draft eligible until 20 ffs.

I am not sure what to think on this...Obviously CBJ needs to even the trade, RJ is a spot filler for Edm and is a consistent 20g guy. Omark is useless due to no contract and RJ is signed longterm to a fairly respectable contract.

I would do it though. This lets Edm forget about Smyth, gives another option for a natural LW on the 2nd line to fight with MPS and Harti for 2nd line duty next year, while giving a guy that does not get 2nd line duty the 3rd line spot with Horc and Jones.

AND Edm gets to draft who they really want...Griffin "Universal Soldier" Reinhart...

Ya the timetable is longer or the window certainly is - could be 7-8 years. Which of course further supports your point about overpaying or rash and rushed decision making on the D front. Let it build - I hear you.

If I was looking to spell that name you would be right.

EDIT: B-Hud has his listings up...Galchenyuk is higher rated by him than Yak, Murray and Reinhart are 5-7 rated.

Interesting to pick Gal over Yak...get our #2 center, shift Gags to the LW (or heaven forbid trade him as part of a pkg to get in the 5-7 range to get our Dman.

Naw... If you're taking a forward, you have to go with Yakupov. I don't get the Galy over Yak thing.

And if Edmonton was interested in Galy, they would have invited him to Edmonton, like they did with Yakupov and Murray.

Just like with that nub I was "chatting" with yesterday....hypothetical...Gal has been linked to Yak talent wise, the injury held him back. He is a Center and can take over in the #2 spot. And he has decent size. And from my understanding he had a good showing at the combine.

They didn't invite Galy to EDM?

I'm surprised. when thinking five years down the line - which is what Magnificent Bastard's job is, I have to think Galy has huge stock. For me, Galy really seems to be the best guy fitting positional need and BPA. Could be as good as Yakupov and he is a centreman. His stock keeps rising.

I wish it was 2005.
