give me an honest opinion (and i know you guys might not get to watch a ton of him because he plays in pitt)....but what is jordan staal worth

the guy has averaged 50 pts/ year the last 3 years with his best year being this past at 50 pts in 62 games.

i say NO WAY is he a #1 center...our bloggers are suggesting we give up everything to go after this guy and i just dont see it....at all

IMO he is a 2nd line center and nothing more. sure he can kill penalties and whatnot but he will never score 70 or more pts in a year

I think the A Coach job would have to be a ridiculous payout to get him, I thought I read that he said he had done that but would rather be Head and he likes where he is in his coaching career, and he gets to develop more in it.

So no, I do not see him taking the job.

- OilHorse

Yes, that is what he said. It would have to be unbelievable for him to take an assistants job anywhere because he does want to be the HC. I'm just saying, if you were offered the NHL job which pays more, more growth etc, would you not be a moron to not take a job in the best hockey league in the world vs the farm team job? Explain to me how you develop your coaching skills more in the AHL vs the best league in the world, the NHL. That makes absolutely zero sense in my mind.

And as for the Coffey thing, you can't compare Coffey to players like Lidstrom, even Bourque. Coffey played in the league with the Oilers on a team that preached offense first and defense was a secondary thought and when you scored 6 and 7 goals most times you didn't have to worry about your defense as much. Hell he was rushing the puck from end to end half the time. You have to look at the era these players played in. When Coffey and the Oilers were winning cups it was rare to see a 2-1 or 3-2 game. It's common place now. One of the reasons play in the NHL now is NOWHERE NEAR as exciting as it was in the Oilers heydays when the Battle of Alberta actually meant something instead of just another boring ass game to watch as it is now with no desire or fire.

Hmmmm... tough one to call. I know we could sure use Jordan on our team. I feel for the kid because he has talent and a lot of the big sports writers out there do believe if the Pens traded him that he would be a number one or number two center on most teams. It's tough to have that skill and play a third line center because guys named Crosby and Malkin are ahead of you. Tough for the Pens too because if Crosby takes one more hit to the head his career is likely over, as sad as that is to say. You need to put health first and for that reason I think the Pens would be hesitant to move Jordan.

The Sabres have the 12th overall pick which will still leave availability for some good players, especially dmen. I think if the Sabres were willing to trade their first round and third round picks and a roster player for Jordan and the Pens 2nd round pick they would come out okay.

He's better than a 50 point guy. You have to remember that the Pens best wingers play with Crosby and Malkin. I know if Edmonton traded for him and he was playing with any of Hall, Eberle, Hemsky or Yakupov (the Oil will draft him), he could easily get 80 plus points. Its good he has talent, but he needs it around him and the Pens third line players don't cut it for that level of talent.

I guess the same way you develop players in teh AHL rather than the NHL. He himself feels that he needs to hone his skills where he is before he makes the jump.

sure you can...the Bleacher report just did it. People do it all the time. just because you disagree doe snot make them, or you, wrong. It is a comparison and all based on opinion.

You think it is wrong to have Coffey lower than Bourque, I don't .

We had all this Staal chatter in our blogs a few weeks ago. i would not give up the farm on him with his contract as it is now...signed longterm I would make a pitch but I see him as a great 2nd line center, Kesler-ish. can produce and is strong defensively.

Wait for his UFA and throw money at him, but I would not trade for him cause Pitts will want way too much.

This is the comment you're talking about, correct?

The Sabres have exactly what Ray Shero and the Penguins are looking for in a trade partner: 2 first rounders and 2 second rounders in the NHL draft. Regier also has assets in Derek Roy, who is a 70 point centre. He can also sweeten a deal with prospects like Luke Adam and Mark Pysyk. I'd even include Jhonas Enroth in a package for Staal.

All I have to say it... Thank god your blogger isn't Buffalo's GM.

In EDM, Staal won't be a 1C, he will be a 2C. I do believe he has the potential to reach 70 point season depending on his linemates. At his current contract state, he is worth a upcoming prospect that can handle the 3C PIT and 1st round pick maximum with the one year term left. Once that one year term is over, I would say he's only worth a mid-late 1st round pick and maybe a 2nd round pick too depending on hungry GMs.

Which is why I bring up Hall who has not played 70 games yet. Could just be a matter of growing into a physically mature body to handle the trauma of the game.

I guess if a slimy, scaly vienna sausage is resembling an anaconda...

Oh, wait, I get it...it is a nickname like calling a fat guy Slim, or a Big guy tiny or little john.
