Read the article I linked to from the Traikos, KHL is not in the equation. You may not like Grigs but bolting to another league can not be used now. - LeafMan
That is BS. Filatov wanted nothing to do with the KHL either. He spoke fluent English. He loved North America. He was dying to play here. He did everything in his power to play and stay in the NHL.
Until he didn't get his way.
Now where is he? |

Pass. Why give up something we could get for free? - Unholy_Goalie
Agreed. If Schultz really wants to come to Toronto, he'll sign with us on July 1st. If he had no intention of signing here, trading assets for his rights would be pointless if he still walks. |

Overload on D
Colborne is useless
Anaheim gets some return.
Burke likes to keep good relationships with GM's... thus no offer sheet to Kessel, thus no offer sheet to Stamkos, or Doughty. He also obviously has a good relationship with Anaheim. Whether he is tampering or not, I think he would like to put a deal together rather than go after him after he leaves Anaheim and leaves the Ducks high and dry.
... don't think for a second that Chiarelli didn't know he was overpaying for Kaberle. That trade was a direct result of the Kessel deal working out so poorly for the Leafs and the fact that Burke and Chiarelli have a very good relationship. |

You're under the mentality that every Russian is of the same mindset, you have to let go of this fallacy. If I thought that way I would have to expel Frenchie from HB. |

Well he stayed in Russia-3 (Only Anisimov has ever come out of there when drafted) instead of traveling across the Ocean at 17 for one thing. |

The KHL will always be an option for Russian players. As long as the league is there and the money is reasonably there, they can and will always use it as a way out. |

This is about Burke not wanting it to go down this way.
... but I am just guessing

Exactly.
That is why we will not get schultz for free.
There will be a movement of assets. even if we still win this deal by a landslide if we get him. |

It's nice that Grigorenko made the sacrifice to go play in the QMJHL but to act as if the KHL is out of the equation for the duration of his career is untrue. If things get rough, it's a way out. And it's happened many, many, many times before. |

Sure it is an option... but I don't think it is a preferred option in most cases, or we would see more top-level Russians, in their prime, playing there.
I sat on one of those overnight flights across Russia on Aeroflot airlines. You would not want to play hockey after that flight.

Colborne isn't useless. Less than what was expected, certainly, but not useless.
They shouldn't have to pay for something that will become free. The good relationship isn't that important. He's pretty much squeezed Anaheim for everything that he needed at this point.

The average pay is 150,000, only real stars make the real money aka Radulov. If you're a mediocre player who lived in Russia your whole life and never left why would you go to Denver to play in the ECHL hoping one day to make a grand total of 800,000? 90% of the Russian stars are in the NHL the others are either young and developing or have failed, much like so many failures run around the AHL or bugger off to Switzerland/Sweden/Finland/Germany and other places that pay well for a piss poor pro. |
