that was a joke. every player's numbers were in the toilet, including Brodeur. MacLean was an abomination as a head coach.
- MartysBetter88

great assistant coach though

Optimism?

I think 49 states are in for a surprise, when all is said and done.

Map probably looked similar for the Philly, and possibly NY series too.

No doubt in my mind about that, for both series.

Are there any Devils fans out there just a little bit nervous about Brodeur potentially coming back for yet another year?

Over the last two seasons, Brodeur has only put up a .9056 cumulative save percentage (well below average these days) in 115 appearances. Expand the study to include the two seasons before that, and Brodeur is about .911 (approximately league-average) in his last four seasons against 5659 shots.

By comparison, his backups (Clemmensen, Weekes, Danis, Hedberg and McKenna) have significantly outperformed him statistically over the same four-year sample, collectively averaging .9165 against 3295 shots. New Jersey's backups also boast a better GAA and a better winning percentage over the sample than Brodeur.

Brodeur may very well win his fourth Stanley Cup in a few weeks. But at least to my eyes (and according to the numbers), his performance over the last four seasons has been average at best, and probably below-average when accounting for team factors. Worse, those numbers seem to be trending downward, which of course we would expect for a guy who just turned 40.

Regardless of where you place Brodeur in the all-time rankings, those have to be some pretty disconcerting statistics, right?

If I were a Devils fan, I would probably be uncomfortable with Brodeur in anything other than a backup role next seasons.

- Sven22

He's played well when it counted. We've always seemed to play better when our back-ups are in, played tighter defensively. If he comes back, he's no longer going to be starting 70 or so games a season, the key, I think, is to get a back-up capable of taking on the load if Brodeur struggles, like Hedberg has. Hedberg and Brodeur had a 50-50 split in the first half of the season, Marty was given the reigns post-all-star break, and he's played exceptionally well since then. If we manage to snag a guy like Harding or such, then we are fine. We just need a reliable back-up, the days of a back-up who plays 10 games the whole season are over, we need a 30 games a season guy.

Better question is how many people picked the Kings because they were from LA, and they know nothing whatsoever about hockey?

EDIT: I am going to go with 67%

My knee jerk reaction was to pick the kings for obvious reasons but having sat on it I think you guys can win for sure.

You have a great team year after year I don't know why anyone would count you out. I see this as another 6 or 7 game series.

Good luck guys.

I think we're going to have our hands full. Either Kings in 6 or Devils in 7. They're just so good.. 2 top lines . and Kopitar doesn't have a herniated disc to deal with slowing him down. They're dangerous, healthy and rested. . and they're feeling good.

Florida was Florida, Philly was old and injured, NY was dumb and Gabby was nowhere cuz he was hurt. .. but we beat the Queen so that counts for something.

Do you not think it is because the Kings are the hottest team in the playoffs right now?

Maybe they played arguably better teams with better results?

Just because they didn't pick NJ doesn't mean they don't know anything about hockey lol.

This series should go six or seven. I'm picking the Kings, fan loyalty aside, but the Devils aren't underdogs by any means. It can really go either way.

I said how many of them. You know a lot of people will hop on the Los Angeles bandwagon for any sport, of course some pick the Kings for obvious reasons.

Sykora, if he plays too, I love the small group of people, because that means they are hungry for one.

Yeah they will.

I was just saying that people wrote the Kings off the first three series, it was only after we won all three did people start giving us more respect, but I get your point.

I didn't see much writing off of the Kings, if any, after they'd taken a stranglehold on the first round. The Devils, as I saw, got the opposite: they were discounted ever since Florida went up in their first round series. Of course, this is only what I saw and heard.

People wrote us off against St. Louis. Said we were the same team, only they were better.

Phoenix, maybe not, but I'll look past that just to "prove" my point. I can't go back now.

Honestly, people gave you a considerable amount of respect as an eight seed. I know most on this board, Todd included, thought you would beat vancouver. There were more than a few analysts that thought the same. The blues certainly had a majority of the picks, but it wasn't overwhelming. There were still people going for the Kings. It wasn't nearly as extreme as the Devils-Flyers predictions, or even Devils-Rangers. Devils-Kings is interesting because a majority of fans are going kings, while the analysts have been pretty even from what I've seen.
