Well, it'll happen this year but it'll be the first time. The odds are heavily against you as the lower seed. Always have been and probably always will be. Cinderella stories are nice but they rarely win Cups.

This is true, but I think the league has been getting progressively tighter in the salary cap era, upsets might become a little more common. It's great for the league at any rate. So much better than the NBA where the first round is much more of a formality.

In the West, yes. In the East, hell no. The Kings underachieved this year. If they played like this all year long, they would have won their division. Easily.

The Devils are just the Devils. Defense and Brodeur. And the Devils are the only team to ever win it from 5th. If they win it this year, they'll do it from 6th (5th in the East in points, tied for 7th overall in points).

Yeah, but the Kings didn't play this way all year, that's why they were the eighth seed. And Jersey did their thing, but the second seed also got knocked off by Washington. We saw Montreal shock Washington and Pittsburgh a few years back. Personally I hope it's a trend where there is significantly less predicability in the matchups. It certainly would be a great vindication of the parity under the cap system.

Upsets have always happened. But the Cinderella stories has never ended with a Cup. No team has ever won from 6th, 7th or 8th and only one has ever done it from 5th.

If it happens once in 30 years, are those good odds? I wouldn't say so.

The stats prove it. If you want to win the Cup, the best odds are with teams that are in the top four seeds. At worst, top 8-10 team in the league.

I don't dispute that the better teams get more points in the regular season and are favourites, of course. I'm just saying the way teams are allowed to operate has seen a major change in the last 7 years with the cap. What effect that has is an open question. The intent was to create more parity, and it seems to have compacted the standings. Favourites will always be favourites but perhaps a little bit more uncertainty will exist. Should be interesting to see at any rate, it has been this year.

Like I said, the West, is closer together but the East, not really.

As for the favorites, it's the same thing as the draft when you think about it. Henrik Zetterberg got drafted 210th overall in the 7th round. It happened once. Does that mean that suddenly the 210th overall pick in the 7th round is more valuable than the 1st overall pick in the 1st round? Of course not. Possible, yes, probable, no.

Well at any rate it sure is a lot more interesting than back in the day where you could have one team playing a bottom seed that had twenty or thirty or more less points. Top seeds will always have a better chance, but if the gap between all the teams is smaller, it's definitely more interesting. So I hope upsets and low-seed runs become at least more frequent.

What I'm really cheering for is the ultimate - game seven OT, next goal wins everything. That would be SWEET

The Kings have the 2nd best PK in the playoffs and the Devils have been scoring a lot of PP goals to help them win games. The Devils are in for a rude awakening on special teams.

Also, the Kings PP has been horrid and the Devils PK has been horrid. So if the Kings are able to start scoring PP goals against the weak Devils PK, the Kings could easily win the battle of the special teams.

Expect a six or seven game series with at least two or three of them going to OT.
