Actual dollar amounts hardly matter these days.
Especially to a team with revenues like the canucks make.
Its the cap hit ( which actually isnt brutal at 5.3) or the term.
In this case its the term. 10 years. Brutal
Otherwise, luongo would fetch a ton. The guys an effin good goalie. - hugefemale dog77

I could see him in Minny. they have a bright future and if they add Parise they'll be in the running for the northwest next year. |

I want a million dollars.
He could go to 29 other teams. The money he's gonna get offered is going to be insane. |

It's a retirement contract. No way he continues to play at 3 and 1 million dollars his last four years and if he does...he's probably still playing well. It's pretty much 6 years left at 5.3 cap hit. If GMs who are in need of elite goaltending are afraid of that contract than they shouldn't be GMs. The rewards outweigh the risks big time. When was the last time an elite goalie was made available??? |

There is a baseball analyst Seth Everett that comes on the 1040 once a week. He is in NJ and says there is 0 chance Parise comes back. He said, his exact quote" I have talked to many of Zacks friends, and they all say he will only sign in Minny, Det, or NYR".
If they get Parise and Suter I am not to sure about a third Prez Trophy. |

Thats a ridiculous argument. Any gm that takes that contract on needs to be fully prepared to pay till the end of it. U cant bank on lu retiring and hope to get out of it.
Imo, any gm that did that ^, shouldnt be a gm.
We've seen the horror stories that these long term contracts can do to a teams cap for years on end, so how can anyone blame a GM for at least being apprehensive to take one on?
It sounds as though your attempting to convince me/yourself?
Keep him then if hes so valuable and deal schneider.
I can almost guarantee you'll get the package u want for cory. |

The bottom 11 teams who have at leat $8.5 million in cap space or more, not a lot of great choices there as they almost all have good goaltending. |

if he doesn't retire then you buy him out. 580,000 sitting on your books for the next 8 years sucks, but it isn't a terrible number.

Or send him to the minors, which is more likely, as he doesn't have a NMC. |

What good does that do unless you are the one signing contracts for one of the 30 teams?
This is just debating nothing more. It is a rumour site ,not the GMs annual meeting site.
Don't think I am even suggesting Luongo to Edm trade, I am not. I can tell you LU would be a better option over the next six years than what EDM has.Anyone could agree to that.
Your team is a few years away from the playoffs and even that is not a guarantee, seeing how the NHL changes the game every two years.A goalie like Luongo would help a non playoff team actually make the playoffs.Say what you want about him. Last Year Lu matured and is half the reason we made the playoffs. We had an early exit but we made it to the dance at least. |

I could be wrong on this Ian but I'm fairly sure I read that the buyout clause in any new CBA would be a one-time-only, one-contract-only amnesty buyout that would have to take place this year. I don't think it's something that can be stored away for a raining day, as in we use it to buy out Lecavalier in say 4 years' time when his production plummets. Speaking of which, I could see Ballard being the one we use that clause on to buy him out.
All in all, I agree that all things being equal (ie if cap space weren't an issue) Lecavalier would be a great help to this team as a 2nd line playmaking center. I'm just not sure how long that would be the case for and to have a 7.7M player (our most expensive player by far) skating on the 3rd line would be gross contract mismanagement by our GM. I'm almost positive Gillis will not entertain this idea. |

Not you Lefty but I find it amazing that fans think a 39 year old gazillionaire would like to train hard every summer so he can go sit on the end of the bench in big sweatty equiptment night after night for 1 million dollars instead of being with his family.
If I am Lu and I am back up after 39, I am sitting on that bench eating ham sandwiches ,drinking beer and smoking cigars while the game is in progress |

I agree...there's 99.9% chance that he retires. But there's always that chance he still wants to play, can't see it though!!! |

Three more years of 4.2 for a guy to sit in the pressbox or 5.3 for 6 more years of a top 15 goalie who can be productive. Yes it is a serious question. |

how come nobody's talking about putting him in the minors. if we don't care about feelings, bury him, booth and ballard and sign weber, suter and parise. |

Anyone read Toperzer's blog on the McGuire interview? Some pretty wild stuff. One thing he said that was very true is TO still has little to work with. |

Correction: What you want in a trade is to do whats best moving forward which isn't always upgrading. I think they'd listen to the offer but I doubt they would accept the trade especially if another team offered something without a massive long term contract because I'm sure they don't want another one of those. Personally if I was Gillis, I would be happy trading Luongo for a top quality defensive prospect and a 2nd rounder, even a 3rd or 4th. I wouldn't care TOO much what I get out of Lu but at least I have acquired a d-man for the future, a second round pick that could turn out to be a star or I could end up trading with a package, and I've successfully gotten rid of a contract where I can now spend that money on a top 6 winger and/or top quality depth. |

Lu has like $40 left on his deal. Buying him out for $25m+ when he's still an asset is not how the business of hockey works or any other business for that matter. I know fans like to throw money around, but there is no way a player of Lu's ability gets bought out for that kind of fortune. It just boggles the mind to even consider it. |
