It's not in the job description. - mr.peanut
"Languages can be learned" really only applies to coaches. |

Tell that to Saku who was here for years.
What about Plekanec? Never heard him speak one word of french. - QuebecPride
Both those guys know 2-3 languages at least. Also they are players, not coaches. They don't need to learn French.
I honestly don't understand all the Plekanec hate in Montreal. |

Don't be silly. Even the strongest nationalist and souverainist would accept that nomination. The guy won everything. - QuebecPride
my point isn't that he would be accepted or not, it's that his acceptance would have nothing to do with the fact that he went to McGill. you think the firestorm would have been any less severe if Cunneyworth had attended McGill? |

No, but I'd like to think they would recognize him as an elite coach with a Montreal background. Also as someone who said it would be very important to learn French to coach in MTL. - Apples
You can't really say no when a guy of his stature accepts to coach your team. |

I love plekanec. I was just saying that those guys have been here for years and didn't learn the language.
Maybe that's more a testimony of how easy it is to live in english in a French province for a whole life than an attack to the players.
I never had any problem with Saku or Plekanec.
If they really wanted to learn the language, they would've learned it just like Robinson, Gainey and other anglophones/allophones did in the past. Maybe the city is that much anglophone nowadays eh. |

This is Montreal in 2012 where you can get anywhere and get anything in English.
It is not necessary to know French to live here because the majority of the Montreal population speak and understand English.

They are (frank)ing hockey players. They play a game. (frank) cares what language they spew their generic, rehearsed lip service in? But the puck in the net and STFU. |

Coaches really don't need it either. - mr.peanut
Yes they need it. They speak daily to the media, and therefore to the public. If you need a guy who speaks french for the GM, a guy who'll speak to the media 10 times a year or so to the public, you certainly need a guy who speaks daily to the public to be able to speak to the majority of their fans in their mother language.
Unless the coach is Tortorella-lite during the Press conferences, then you don't really care. |
