Trade Sharp and Saad to Boston for Lucic and a pick/D-prospect. Hawks get bigger and grittier in heir top 6 and hopefully a legit D prospect. Boston gets snipe-ier and more home town prospect-ier.

Trade Crawford, Kruger, Olsen, and a 1st to Dallas for Ott, Lehtonen, and the RFA rights to Mark Fistric. Stars get a serviceable, less expensive bridge to their Goalie of the future, promising center and D prospects and of course a high draft pick. Hawks get a rugged wing, a number one GT, and the rights to a young D-man that's as good now as Olsen dreams to be in 2-3 years.

Sign Bryan Allen, Zenon Konopka, Adam Burish, and Matt Carkner. Solid top 4 D-man, two PK/face off/character/agitator guys, and the guy John Scott wishes he could be like.

Lehtonen would certainly be an upgrade, but I don't trust his health.

His groin is Khabibulin-like.

Maybe, if it went up a lot. I kind of think two $3-4 million guys would be money better spent, and if the cap goes up significantly then I think I'd rather add 3 solid vets than one overpriced D-man. For close to the same money, I'd rather have Matt Carle AND Bryan Allen.

Seabs/Keith
Carle/Allen
Hammer/Leddy

This. Then trade for a few big wingers and we are back in the hunt.

As a Preds fan, I completely agree with you.

I watch him night in and night out, and he will be challenged when not opposite Weber.

Don't get me wrong here. He is consistent and solid with the puck. However, Weber makes the pairing look really good.

One thing Suter is not, is a scoring D man. He is tentative to shoot the puck and the main reason his assists were high this year was because 1) Weber has a cannon and 2) He was on the point for a top rated power play.

5.5-6 would be a good price for Suter opposite Weber. Out of Nashville, no Weber, I bet he looks more like a 4-4.5 type of guy that someone will overpay.

I honestly won't be surprised if we move/drop Suter, resign Weber long term and place Ryan Ellis in Suter's spot. In the long run, I wouldn't mind as a fan because Ellis has a great shot and will be a good D man.

- predJD

I think everyone who is so quick to spend $70m for 10 seasons needs to think about the fact that Suter is partnered with every Dmans ideal of the perfect partner.

I believe Nashville already has figured out all the options. Option 1, they resign Suter and it is announced a few days after the Stanley Cup final has been completed. Option 2, they conclude that they will not get a deal done and trade Suter's negotiation rights to the Flyers. I do not believe there is a 3rd option at this time.

And if they shelled out $3-4 million and they find out he is for real? I don't know much about him other than 9 ppg , good size, 130-150 hits per season.

At some point the hawks have to get more aggressive to get the players they want. I haven't seen it. seems to me that all the aggressive teams get their pick of the talent and then the hawks come in afterwards on the cheap to acquire the leftovers (brunette, mayers, sod, oduya). A day late and a dollar short comes to mind. Would like to see them target a good young player and get aggressive to acquire that player. the 'other teams are overpaying' excuse is getting old

- moylander

Yup, basically agree with your statement. What you are talking about is taking the Holmgren / Ed Snyder approach instead of the ultra conservative game plan.

The conservative game plan has its roots in this devotion to a core group of players and its as if moving one of them would be sacrelgious just because they won a Cup 3 years ago. Combine that with a novice G.M. who can't or won't make a bold move for fear of being wrong or being criticized and the result is gridlock or just safe signings of over the hill guys to one year deals. To boot, the core group of guys with big contracts keeps expanding.

I will give Bowman as pass on 2010-11 but a gigantic FAIL on 2011-12. Until he sends one of his core pets down the road for a player that really shores up team deficiencies, I think the Hawks go nowhere but downhill or tread water at best. I've seen nothing from him that tells me he is capable of doing that. Basically he talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk.

Really, I swear I'm not practicing on anyone. It's one of those damn "cram" classes. 4 hours of classroom time a day, followed by about 8 hours hitting the books for three weeks straight. It's just my brain regurgitating "knowledge overflow." I mean no harm!

I'm not saying Garrison isn't the "real deal." I just believe that after one great season, it doesn't make a ton of sense handing out a multi-year deal to a guy paying him $3-$4 million a season when he could possibly not be as good as advirtised.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I'd rather see that money spent on a guy like Carle, who has more of a proven track record, or a least a few consistant seasons under his belt.

For everyone who is thinking they can get Suter for 5-6 million, keep dreaming..Maybe for 1 or 2 years, but you would have to give up so much to get that, it would be worth it. Trust me, Poile will trade Suters rights before he become as UFA.

I would venture to say, if he leaves, he is looking at 7.0 million. If he stays in NSH, he may accept as much as 6.5, no lower. And that is because he knows that the team still needs money left over to bring in more talent.

Now, the wild card is Weber. If Weber ends up signing for more then 7.5 Suter will want at least 7.

- dgutzman

The only way Suter would sign in the $5-6M range is if its a deal like Keith's. DK at age 26 signed his 13-yr $72M extension, which took effect at age 27. His cap hit is $5.5M. Suter turned 27 earlier this year.

After all the hype of cap-circumventing deals calmed down (e.g. Hossa, Pronger etc), Keith's deal sailed through.

Wonder how much the GM's are going to consider this type of deal knowing the upcoming CBA. Wonder if JJ or Al can comment on the impact of the upccoming CBA negotiations on whether or not the league / owners would frown on long term deals like Keith's.

Why would you dump a better all around d man in Brian Campbell (remember him, he helped win you a cup) just to turn around and sign a worse player, for almost as much money?

Makes zero sense.

- mxgsfmdpx

Only if you buy the premise that Campbell is a better defenseman. Which most people don't.

only flaw in the spending argument is that it was Dale Talon who overspent for campbell and huet.. Bowman hasn't shown the balzz to make any moves other than signing aged vets and premature rookies.

Please no more sharp for lucic trade proposals! Why would the bruins do this? WHY? Lucic is the prototypical power forward that EVERY team in the NHL would want. Oh and hes only 24 years old and not even in his prime yet! So boston is going to trade him away to become a softer team while picking up a 30+ year old sniper who's best years are behind him. How does sharp fit their style of play anyways?

Its not Sharp for Lucic. Its clearly Kane for Lucic, Rask, Seguin, the Bruins 1st round pick, and their anthem singer according to wonthecup10.

I could see Edmonton making a hard push for Suter. The one thing they are missing badly is defenseman. Wouldn't be a bad place to sign a long term contract seeing as the talent they've been able to grab with the past few drafts.

You gotta think it would be very depressing to live in edmonton 9 months out of the year. Im sure the summers are ok, but the winters. woof. If I were a free agent i would probably pick a major market in a city I would enjoy. But thats just me. Not many players are jumping at the chance to go to edmonton, if anything they want out.

Lucic & Toews on the top line with ass-hauling Stalberg! Wow!

That would be one mean-ass bottom 6 forwards to play against! Yikes!

My only fear on this scenario is can Q keep Leddy to under 20min TOI for at least this upcoming season?

Gotta wonder though if it'd take more to get Lucic out of beantown.
