After the season Garrison had, I'm not sure if he's the "real deal" either. Just how inflated are his stats while paring up with Campbell?

I'd hate for the Hawks to shell out $3-$4 million to find out he's a dud.

I don't remember Campbell making players around him better?

How much could Shane O'Brian be had for?

If you're viewing O'Brien as a 6th or 7th defenseman, I'd have to say the Hawks really can't spend more that $1.25-$1.5 million to fill that slot, tops. Can O'Brien get more than that? I don't know.

Martin isn't going anywhere. If he does, he'll fetch a decent return. I saw you mentioned Clutterbuck in the last thread. He isn't moving either.

Campbell helped for sure but he didn't shoot the puck for him....

Garrison got shots on goal at a about a 10% clip....That is really great accuarcy for a dman.

Garrison instead of Wideman. Don't think Wideman is real deal, imo
- dpard

Garrison would work too. Didn't see him enough but what I saw of Wideman I liked. Can play physical and has a decent shot and here's the key...he can get it on net. Any combo of what's been discussed makes our D better and addresses current needs in the form of two guys instead of one (Suter) which we agree on. One of Carle, Wideman, Garrison plus Allen sounds good to me. Then find either a 2C with size or big winger to play in the top 6 and sign Jim Slater to center the 4th and call it a successful offseason.

I'll blame it on the Philosophy class I'm suffering through this summer.

As for Campbell making players around him "better," take a look at the Hawks defense over this season. It really seemed to be lacking. One reason could be the loss of him, but it's not the only reason. Hjalmarsson hasn't looked the same without him. I've seen others here argue this point as well.

Garrison has seemed to have a real breakout season skating on a paring with Campbell. There has to be something attributed to Campbell concerning Garrison's success.

I'm not sure missing Campbell is what ails hammer. He looks like a deer in headlights out there. Not impressed by his progression.
I think garrison could play with Allen too

And if they shelled out $3-4 million and they find out he is for real? I don't know much about him other than 9 ppg , good size, 130-150 hits per season.

At some point the hawks have to get more aggressive to get the players they want. I haven't seen it. seems to me that all the aggressive teams get their pick of the talent and then the hawks come in afterwards on the cheap to acquire the leftovers (brunette, mayers, sod, oduya). A day late and a dollar short comes to mind. Would like to see them target a good young player and get aggressive to acquire that player. the 'other teams are overpaying' excuse is getting old

Why would he want to go to Calgary? From what JJ said he wants to be closer to his family in Madison, WI. I would guess he would stay with Nashville or go to many other teams before going to Calgary. Not all that close to Madison. Just checked the miles.
Chicago to Madison 146 miles
Minneapolis to Madison 268 miles
Detroit to Madison 428 miles
Nashville to Madison 621 miles
Calgary to Madison 1456 miles
Just to show a few.

I was making fun of the paying him 6mill statement and how its the same as Jbos

Only selling points in calgary would be, he'd get playing time, and His uncle played and won a cup there (drafted by calgary and played there longer then chicago)

So if that has any weight to it, calgary is in the running.

But I doubt they are

i hope for the hawks benifit kevin delaney can help olsen find two or three less seconds of straight line speed when going end to end. watching him play he looks to have good lateral speed so i am hoping his slow straight line speed is due to a flaw in his skating technique or lack of strength

for his sake he will only be a number six if he cannot get faster but if he can find 3 strides he could be a top four and be well compensated for it
hope olsen is committed to improving

Really, I swear I'm not practicing on anyone. It's one of those damn "cram" classes. 4 hours of classroom time a day, followed by about 8 hours hitting the books for three weeks straight. It's just my brain regurgitating "knowledge overflow." I mean no harm!

I'm not saying Garrison isn't the "real deal." I just believe that after one great season, it doesn't make a ton of sense handing out a multi-year deal to a guy paying him $3-$4 million a season when he could possibly not be as good as advirtised.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I'd rather see that money spent on a guy like Carle, who has more of a proven track record, or a least a few consistant seasons under his belt.

Unfortunately, if jj is correct and the hawks only care about making a splash, we get Suter and some 40 something they put on 1st line and a 6d that they try to play as #4d?
We're talkin Stan here, shouldnt get overly excited

Or teams like Minny who have 21 Mil in space next year enough to sign Parise who is from there and his good friend who wants to play together on the same team. With Minnys goaltending and their abundance of prospects they are going to be a force for years and years.

Trade Sharp and Saad to Boston for Lucic and a pick/D-prospect. Hawks get bigger and grittier in heir top 6 and hopefully a legit D prospect. Boston gets snipe-ier and more home town prospect-ier.

Trade Crawford, Kruger, Olsen, and a 1st to Dallas for Ott, Lehtonen, and the RFA rights to Mark Fistric. Stars get a serviceable, less expensive bridge to their Goalie of the future, promising center and D prospects and of course a high draft pick. Hawks get a rugged wing, a number one GT, and the rights to a young D-man that's as good now as Olsen dreams to be in 2-3 years.

Sign Bryan Allen, Zenon Konopka, Adam Burish, and Matt Carkner. Solid top 4 D-man, two PK/face off/character/agitator guys, and the guy John Scott wishes he could be like.

Just a thought after comparing the two (Carle and garrison.....Then Suter as well).... Carle and Suter don't rack up a lot of hits whereas garrison does. Not saying garrison is better.... It's one stat...... But are either Carle or Suter the type of dman you want in Chicago long-term complimenting an already soft defense from a physicality standpoint? I'm not so sure I want Carle in Philly now. 55 hits is really low for Philly.

I think Heatley is off the books the following year too so they can get another big pick up.That's the team I am worried about. If I see Suter and Parise heading there July 1 st then watch out.
