Watch Burke get Luongo, and then extend his contract

The pressure is on the leafs to make the deal, not so much the canucks. So Toronto is more likely to overpay. That being said, lou isnt the only option the leafs have, maybe the best... but not the only one.
- Deadmau55

The Leafs likely have more options than Vancouver does.

There are a few goalie options but there are very few teams in the market for Luongo.

Is it really that absurd. From what I've seen on these boards, half the TO fanbase is willing to drive him to the airport and half want to give him the key to the city.

Luongo has value. He's not a salary dump. He will cost more than spare parts.

- Fosco

I think he is a salary dump and I am not sure anyone is interested.

Does Tampa want him AND Vinny... or could Vinny be the trade?

Toronto? I have no idea, but Burke hates those contracts, and there is no love lost between the teams.. AND there are other goalie options.

Florida? Really? A team with Markstrom in the fold?

Chicago? Would Vancouver even trade him there and risk that coming back to haunt them?

I really don't know where or how it will all go down, but I think there is every chance of a very weak return.

... on the other hand, there are always 1 or 2 retarded GM's around. I just hope it isn't Burke.

Burke has stated he wouldn't sign a player to those contracts, not that he wouldn't take one on. He is also under a huge amount of pressure to get into the playoffs, which should not be underestimated. Also, as someone already pointed out, Nonis is also a big Luongo fan. As bad as the term is on the contract, the cap-hit is actually pretty good.

Tampa would have to get rid of salary before they took on Lou's contract, but there are several ways that could happen. TB is also not far from being a contender—a good goalie and a few defenders, and they're right back in the mix.

Florida is less likely, but Talon has never shied away from big contracts, and usually has an unpredictable move up his sleeve in the offseason.

Vancouver may have to take some undesirable salary back, but there will also be an asset of some value included, as well, or Gillis won't make the deal.

I find this funny seeing as toronto was in the playoffs till the last month, and with their prospects showing some talent they will only be better next season.. Also have you taken a look at some rfas out there?

EXACTLY and in just his 2nd year and on lottery team!

PFFFT, Schroeder

- As_I_See_It

Does that make it better or worse?

Hall and Nugent-Hopkins could suffer long term effects from playing in the NHL too early.

Schroeder will develop nicely in the AHL, similar to Getzlaf, Perry, Richards, Carter, Hodgson etc...

Too much, no way Burke and Nonis give up a 1st for Lu.
- LeftCoaster

You are correct. I was thinking along the lines of 2 or 3 first rounders....

Ooooh, Ek made sure to put Kadri in the photo with Luongo, that's one of his little messages. Get ready to start saying Kadri is an upgrade from Cody, Canuckleheads, you're gonna love him!

Seriously though, this Luongo thing is the gift that never stops giving. Hearing Van fans who previously scoffed at the notion that Toronto had anything that anyone could ever want now advocating for a Leafs trade is pretty funny.

Vancouver had two very valuable goaltending assets, then they go and totally alienate the far less tradeable one and degrade their trading position considerably for the sake of two games in a playoff series they were gonna lose anyway...then extend the coach who made that call. That's like having two perfectly good cop cars, and setting one on fire and then flipping it over for no reason, without insurance.

It will be Thomas Vokoun, not Luongo, who starts in front of Reimer/Scrivens.

Because Vokoun did so well in Washington right?

Vancouver does not want any goaltender that Toronto has. Lack is a better goaltender then either of your goaltenders. This is the reason that Luongo is even being considered. With Luongo the leafs should make the playoffs. And Lombardi is way more realistic then komisarek. We don't need washed up D-men but a 3rd line center is something we do need. I would be happy with a Schenn and Lombardi for Luongo trade. Van gets an under achieving prospect and a salary dump. Toronto gets a chance to make the playoffs.
- SMP8719

Agreed. Either Lombardi or Armstrong along with Schenn.

And how does Schneider feel about staying if Gillis can't make a deal?

I think Vancouver fans are forgetting that.

This is a bad situation and everybody in the league knows it.

You don't follow hockey do you? Look at chi situation a couple seasons back. They had to move guys. No choice. Literally could not fit under the cap. With your rational all teams could sit and allow them to have an illegal roster. Teams become desprete to make themselves better.

Im sure there is a limit on how many 1st rounders a gm can trade away. My hunch is, it's called the Brian Burke rule.

How do the situations compare. Our season this yr was different them last. Much different. Most canucks fans agree there needs to be changes. Yet every yr fans like yourself point to the leags young players and note that they are all future hall of farmers.

Gillis will make a deal. He's not in the rough position other fans think, because there is a market for a goalie with Luongo's skill level, despite the baggage that comes with it.

Schneider's agent has already said publicly that Schneider would split time with Lou again next season. Although, I don't think anyone believes it will come to that.

Honestly, I don't see a Luongo deal being huge, but the Canucks will get a valuable asset from it. Fans from other teams love to hate on Lou, because he is both a Canuck, and a cocky greaseball, but he's also one of the top goaltenders in the league, and there are enough teams who have had such a level of goaltending woes over the past few seasons that they will give up a valuable asset if there's some way they can fit in his contract.

I am sorry that you cannot answer the question.
I did not use a question mark, because it was rhetorical.

Vancouver had a FAR more disappointing season. In fact, I would gladly watch the Leafs fail again next year if Vancouver gets to fail even harder vs. expectation.
