Ek, Shocking blog... Really? Are you kidding on this one?
I am sure Terry Murray is a great person as you say, but come on - the Kings most certainly would not have gone as far as they have now. And then to say that "coaches who come in mid-season are rarely able to instill their own system" is silly.
By that logic the Flyers run to the Cup versus the Hawks two years ago was a results of John Stevens' wonderful system. Come on....
Ek - as nice as you are, I think you are giving Murray *way* too much credit. |

The Kings defensive system is still a product of the TM days, but their conduct, preparation, attitude are all very different due to Sutter. And their offensive attack is also different, along with their breakouts, etc. It took a little while for everything to gel, and it was really King, Nolan, and Carter coming to really spark the offense, but Sutter is really what has gotten them here. Would have Kings have made the postseason had they kept TM? Probably. Would they have gotten this far? Doubtful, they probably would have gone out of the first round in 6 again. |

To be sure, the Kings’ commitment to defense first has not changed from what former head coach Terry Murray instilled in them during his tenure. In fact, Sutter recently credited Murray for his role in the Kings’ recent playoff success.
“Terry Murray is just as important to winning this series [first round against Vancouver] as anybody,” Sutter said to assistant coach John Stevens, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. “…he was a good coach. [Getting fired is] always what happens. The coach takes responsibility when players don’t perform. He put a lot in place the last two or three years.”
Most notably, Murray put into place the way the Kings play defense, turning a team that had little idea how to play in their own zone and gave up goals in large bunches just a few seasons ago, into one of the premier defensive teams in the National Hockey League.
Where Murray went wrong was, even though he wanted his team to be more aggressive offensively, he apparently didn’t trust his players enough to be able to do that while still playing well defensively, not to mention the fact that his more reserved, laid back style was no longer what his still young, but maturing team needed.

The only "credit" Murray should be given is that the Kings finished in the 8th spot, when they probably should have finished in the 3rd spot. |

Murray's system barely got us passed the center line. How the hell did you expect him to get us into the playoffs when we couldn't score on his offense? Also can we fire KOMPON already? Seriously, a fat guy in a comic book store could score more than our power play. |

Um, WHAT? Sutter is the main reason we're here. His system is totally different from Terry Murray's.
Murray had no idea how to give a player a certain role. Unlike with Sutter, the Kings didn't have an identity. When Sutter came in, he gave each player a certain role for how he was going to contribute. He is also a master motivator.
Sutter is the best thing that happened to the Kings. |

Murray was a good coach for developing all the young players. He just couldn't get them to grow up and be ready for a deep run.
Murray probably wouldn't have called up King and Nolan either and that move balanced out the team. - onac22
That was Lombardi who called King and Nolan up, not Murray or Sutter. |

Ek is right.
A house get's built on a foundation. Murray built the foundation. Without that foundation, a house will fall apart. You can build walls, the roof, etc., but the house will fall apart prematurely.
Sutter has come in and made some repairs. The house that Murray was building just wasn't up to code. It was ok, but not good enough. Sutter has fixed a lot of that.
Sutter was the beneficiary of the Carter trade, Nolan and King coming up, and the Kings players finally playing like they cared. I do put a lot of blame on Murray for not being a motivator. Especially with young kids like what we have, I think you do need a hard nose to whip them in shape. Picture a drill sergeant in boot camp.
I'm all onboard the Sutter Train, believe me... but the Sutter Train wouldn't move as it has had it not been for the tracks that Murray layed down. |

Terry Murray deserves TONS of credit for what he did for the Los Angeles Kings. Before he got here the team was a mess with Marc Crawford at the helm. He tought this team structure on defense which is why they are where they're at today. He may have lost the team this season and his system was a bit conservative, but this long time Kings fan appreciates what he did and won't forget his contributions. |
