First, we should draw several lines in the sand. And perhaps a circle.
Next, we should trade Harts to the Kings so they can win 2 cups with our players. Throw in Timmo as well.
And then we should paint ourself in a corner. - Daman
Is there beer in said corner? |

Personally, I'd prefer to draw a triangle. It's the most powerful shape. I don't want to overpay for the circle, anyway. |

I'm sick of people complaining about guys being overpaid. Almost every player is. It's all about the market. Take Briere for example: He was the best forward available and was coming off a year in which he scored 90+ points. He's going to get a TON of money and he did. You can't say "Briere's contract is terrible. Giroux is way better and makes less." The price the Flyers paid for Danny was the price it took to get him. You wouldn't have been able to sign him for less. Same goes for Bryz and all the other UFAs that get big deals. It is what it is. |

The biggest mistake the Flyers could make is signing Ryan Suter to a $7 million+ deal. He's a glorified Carle.

He is more consistent in his own end than Carle though... Carle is a upper-middle class mans Suter. |

Which is why 5mil for Carle is about right if Suter is 7m. Personally Id rather have a 5m Carle over a 7m Suter. I know how good Carle is without a Pronger in the lineup, I dont know how good Suter is without Weber. Carle when he plays a balanced amount of minutes is worth 5mil. Is it a sexy move? No, but unless something better is out there that doesnt destroy your cap space or roster, there are worse positions to be in, imo. |

Suter is more defensively capable but is not in the category of "elite". If you're going to drop $7 million on a D-man make it count. Fans will hate Suter more so than Carle if he gets that kind of money. |

Good points. I think if the Flyers want a top tier d-man they should at least TRY to make a run at Weber. Nashville will want a lot for him but he's one of the few guys that is worth it. Otherwise I'd love to see them go after Parise, re-sign Carle and pick up a solid stay at home guy. |

The Parise talk is certainly interesting. Im with you on talking for Weber, as Homer would say, kick the tires on everything. |

Hartnell was also going to be a UFA when he signed. He got the dollar amount that the market would bear at the time. - Jsaquella
And completed my bromance at the time (as my brother & brother-in-law can attest, as I wanted Hartnell signed as an UFA & HomLer outdid my hopes by acquiring his [and Timonen's] rights). Hence my Hartnell jersey soon afterward. |

I have issues with a long contract, but not a fairly big cap hit.
I agree with the timing. See how the year plays out. See what moves are made this summer. See what happens with the other potential UFAs.
Basically the same stuff I've been saying all along. Don't paint yourself into a corner by drawing a line in the sand. Be open to every possibility. No need to say today, a year before he hits UFA, that you'd pay him no more than $5mm. - Jsaquella
I could live with a two year contract with a high cap hit but anything more is dangerous in my opinion. |

I wouldn't pay Hartnell more than $5m a year either. Are we entitled to intelligent ones, or do we have to draw more shapes in the sand in the corner with paint?
Forget Suter.
What would it take to get Weber? He was a second round draft pick in a not deep draft, so probably not much. Since Harts is worth $6m to everyone else here, maybe Nashville will think so too. Throw in Coburn.
The article in the Phila Inquirer about Parise is dead on. We are not getting Suter or Weber. Parise would be perfect. Harts is a non-issue right now. Debate all we want - Carle will sign.
And that is that (BTW - sarcasm laced throughout my comments).

The Pronger deal was Lupul, Sbisa, 2009 1st & 2010 1st + future considerations for Prongs & Ryan Dingle. I feel Weber would have the Flyers giving up Schenn, JVR, 2 or 3 1sts and then some. |

The best thing about this issue is that he is not a UFA this summer. After a big year we are lucky to assess the next before giving out a contract. I agree that Hartnell is not an All-Star, but he was one of our better players this year. I would wait until Nov/Dec before offering a new contract to see the lay of the land a bit better. |

Sorry to respond to an hours old message, but this just occurred to me.
I was just listeneing to the Preston and Steve show this morning, and one of the guys was with Giroux over the weekend. He had both wrists in bandages. The guy said Giroux told him off the record that this wrists were bad since January. I guess you can kind of tell looking back on it. Guess the on-air guy doesnt know what off the record means.
On a side note, I laughed at a story they told about Giroux. He went over to the guy and pointed at his shirt. The guy looked down and Giroux did the "flick the nose" bit. Then said, "You know what.. That only works and Girls, and you." - RooNosHockey
I assume they saw Claude at the MMRbecue. My sister got backstage passes to it, and as I understand both Giroux and Hartnell were there. That's the second time she's met them in about a month. What the hell, man, she's never even watched an entire hockey game |

2003 was arguably the deepest draft in modern hockey. It produced 20 All-stars plus every 1st rounder played at least a game in the NHL. Regardless, Weber will cost a MAMMOTH amount.

I was testing the intelligence on the board. I flat out tell you I am being sarcastic and you still debate the point.
Thanks for proving out my theory. |
