Why don't you stick to winning the cup and we'll stick to signing Gardiners boyfriend?

No use for Pickard really, going to be a good goalie, but Scrivens has our G prospect pool locked up, Owuya looked really good too. Don't know much about Gaunce, doesn't seem like anything we're in need of.

A stastny trade is really hard to predict as I've talked with a few Avs fans. I believe Connolly would have to be involved, A) to somewhat replace points and B) relieve salary from our side. But apparently the owner doesn't have money issues so guys who are high cap and low salary may not be as attractive as we thought. Avs need wingers so MacArthur might be a guy they are interested in.

Connolly + MacArthur + 2nd for Stastny?

- Boosinicka

-
Their owner does indeed have money issues. Well, he himself doesn't - he's worth billions - but the portion of his business he's willing to commit to the NHL is suffering. Forbes reported he was not making debt payments last year, and had to lower his player salary output. If you look at the actual salaries the Avs dolled out this season, it's a shade under 40 million. Only clever accounting (massive unachievable bonuses for Duchene/Landeskog, and not taking Mueller off the cap during his 50 injured games that insurance paid for) managed to make it look like they were at 49 million.
-
They also had a few players in "low years" on their contacts. For example. Varlamov made only 2.5 million but his cap hit is 2.85, O'Byrne only 1.6 but his cap hit is 1.8. Seems insignificant, but when you're a budget team, 3 or 4 of these kind of deals saves you a million dollars.
-
Look for the Avs to try to deal Stastny for players they can work these kind of contracts with. Franson would be a good bet to be included.

Maybe, but it seems kind of silly to say so. It looks like it will be either Toronto or Edmonton.

Or Vancouver. Man a Gardiner-Shultz pairing could be one of the best things to ever happen to the Leafs. Go get em Burkie! Question, is Forsberg a center or a winger? If he can play center, I would draft him at the 5th spot. But I would also love to draft Dumba, Ceci or Reinhart. So moving down could be an option. Also the guy the leafs really need is Alex Galchenyuk!

ISS ranks Galchenyuk 14th, so there is a very good chance he's still there at 5. They also think Grigorenko will fall all the way to 20, due to the KHL factor. With Galy though, it's that year off that hurts. He's basically lost a full of year of development during a very crucial period - so he's a riskier pick than many fans have convinced themselves.
-
Forsberg can play center, but he's not a natural center. His stock is certainly rising though. If I were a Leaf fan, I'd be happy with him. But really, after Yakupov, I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the next 6-7 picks.

That's what they said the year Schenn was picked and the same thing, the year kadri was selected. I don't think Galchenyuk will be there at 5. I see the Habs grabbing him at 3.

2. Trade 5th overall + Kulemin + Franson for Jordan Staal

- The Shrike

-
I'm always baffled as to why people think Staal has this kind of value. Kulemin alone has achieved more offensively than Staal. More than that though, the real issue with paying a king's ransom for Staal - and this goes for any team, not just the Leafs - is that he will be a UFA in a year. I think it's pretty clear from McKenzie's comments that Staal probably has some desire to play with his brothers. You're essentially giving up a 20 goal scoring power winger, a top 5 pick, and a 30 point defender for 1 year of Jordan Staal - who has a career high of 52 points.
-
No one will pay this kind of price for him, in my opinion.

The Leafs would have to overpay to get him, and such a deal wouldn't be done without some kind of agreement with Staal in reguards to a contract extension. One year of him wouldn't be worth that kind of layout.

The 5th overall and Kulemin are pretty fair value, but if the Leafs sign Schultz first, that would give them the ability to throw Franson into the deal to tip the scales in their favour.

The number one centre slot is their most glaring need after goaltending, and the odds of them either acquiring a number one centre of his quality via trade, free agency, or the draft are slim, therefore an overpayment due to necessity.

How is the 5th overall pick equal Jordan Staal? I really like him, but I would rather trade next year's first rounder, and Kulimen for him. 5th overall for a guy who's career high in points is 52? Even Kulimen eclipsed that.

I don't know if Schultz is thinking TO. It seems to be a dead end for defenceman careers since the lockout. If he does go there it will be for the big money and term. If he was smart he would jump into a team that had a respected and quality top 2 with him fitting into the 5-6. Get your feet wet, no pressure, learn from quality established D men and when injuries arise take your shot. Within 2-3 years, if he's progressed enough, he gets his top 3-4 role and potential big money under his apprenticeship of the other guys. Don't go somewhere where they give you a nickname and label you the next Big thing before you even have 20 games under your belt. That's where they throw you under the bus and call you out based on your salary and then it's non stop trade talk. Why in Gods name would you want to start a career like that.

Honestly the battle for schultz is between TORONTO and EDMONTON. No one else.

Lets say we get justin schultz to play with jake gardiner next season... thats leaves us with a surplus of defence where franson and gunner are the odd man out for a trade. I say NO to schenn since he is a source of toughness that we still need and he is still young player in progress.

Franson Phaneuf

Schultz Gardiner

Liles Schenn

Personally i would get rid of gunnerson before franson.. perhaps in a deal to acquire either stasny or stewart.

Would not trade reimer away for luongo

Would rather go for stasny, stewart, luongo... with the signing of justin schultz... and offers clearly made to parise and suter.

This is just a ridiculous statement. Most of the league will make offers, and he's given no indication of where he will play, as he's still Anh property at the moment.

Mckenzie said Edm is possible, and Lebrun claimed Vancouver would be one of the frontrunners. I'll take their word over yours.

I'm a little concerned that the expectation of Schultz is that he'll make the roster right away.

If the Leafs sign him, great because there is no cost to do so but let him EARN a spot on this team. Don't trade anyoe else until Schultz proves he belongs.

If he will only sign with a team that guarantees him a roster spot, walk. See: Matt Gilroy.

I'm also not interested in trading #5, unless another top 10 pick comes back.

Outstanding post. We are now in the funny season where common sense gets banished to the outer regions of our minds. Sometimes the wisest thought is merely a statement of the obvious when everyone else has already jumped off the cliff without their parachutes.
