One thing I have noticed about the 4 teams left, they are all getting serious contributions from rookies or 2nd year players. This is where teams can make the difference with their salary cap.

Look at our team that won in 09, Letang contributed greatly, TK and Staal were under 20 I think, so not guys that were worth a lot of money. Scud was on a very cheap contract, basically a rookie contract for a guy who had been minor league for a lot of his career.

It looks like we are going to be senior with our forwards (age wise) and young on the back end over the next 3 years as we transition to our draft pics back there. Shero will either need to start drafting quality forwards (not easy in the back half of the draft) to help with the cheaper assets up front.

LA is a good example of being loaded up cap wise with a few players and 'filling in the gaps' with cheap young talent that wont be cheap at the end of their entry level deal because they are going to be able to demand more later, re Scuds.

I hope that made sense, kinda rambled out.

with the way this roster is constructed, those rookies are going to be the make or break I think. Which is nice, forces GM's and coaching staff's to get the most out of the draft and not 'buy' a team.

Speaking of rookie contracts. I kind of hope that the Penguins take a shot and draft Henrik Samuelsson in the upcoming draft. Big kid, plays with some of his fathers nastyness, can play both RW or C all positives in my eyes.

We don't need Patrick Kanes....we need Jamie Benns, Evander Kanes, Chris Stewarts and Cal Clutterbucks on our team.

if we trade with minny

say staal, martin, tk for 1st, cluttebuck, seto and harding.. do you think we would have to throw in our 1st?

bc i really want to have 2 1st rd picks... top 10 pick, then go after pearson or samuelsson

So true... looking back at all of the post lockout Cup winners, Boston is the only team who won without large contributions by guys on rookie deals. Detroit didn't have a lot of rookie deals, but guys like Zetterberg and Franzen were signed on cheap second contracts.

Harding is a UFA, so no need to figure him in on the trade.

Don't the Pens have Ulf Samuelsson's son? Does he have any potential?

I think NY looks like they will be hard pressed to get by Jersey. That was a pretty lame move by Rupp on Brodeur.

he will in a couple of years, he is at the bottom of the depth at D, henrik samuelsson, is a winger and his draft position is climbing the rankings right now

Hey Walshy ! Are you watching these playoffs closely after the Pens exit ? I'm having a rough time of it since the Caps went out. I sort of knew this while the Caps were still in it, but these game (IMO) aren't particularly entertaining (shot blocking, while admirable, isn't very entertaining when taken to the heights that the Caps/Rags have been doing) unless you have a heavy rooting interest in one of the participating teams. Though it was sloppy in many ways, the Pens/Flyers series is probably the most memorable one of the postseason.

I havent watched since the middle of last week. 80 and sunny on Saturday and Sunday is not going to entice me to stay inside and watch afternoon NHL games, extremely poor scheduling by NHL/NBC. The NYR/NJ series in particular has a low entertainment value for a neutral bystander.

I wouldn't mind Clemmensen backing up Fleury. Also, looking at the FA list and its pretty weak. Winnik, Brodziak, and Moore seem to stick out for possible targets.

I hate how Dominic Moore plays personally. I thought he was a puck hog when he played here, he would never cycle the puck down low, he would always try and fight through the bog and then lose the puck.

If we signed Dominic "traded for a 2nd round pick" Moore, we could always trade him for a second round pick at the deadline like he gets seemingly every season lol.
