While I don't believe the drug rumors and think the drinking was largely exaggerated, I do feel there was some truth with his turmoil in the locker room and with the coach, thus the trades. I mean when was the last time, a team traded their franchise player/captain for an unproven rookie and a third liner?
I think the same cannot exactly be said for Carter and to do so is unfair even though I myself felt that way for a while I have re-adjusted my view on Carter. That trade I believe had more to do with getting value and shedding salary than Richards.
Did not have to trade both of them and for the team to do so tells me it was more about something other than re-tooling. I have heard all the rebuttals and still stand firm in that belief. However I feel they have found their groove in La and that's fine. Richards doesn't have to be Captain and that's probably what he wanted all along. The organization probably felt that demoting him from the Captaincy would result in a decade's worth of turmoil and with a NTC looming I can't blame them.
I look at them like the friend from highschool you had a falling out with but got reacquainted on good terms, not as close as you once were, but you wish them well.

It's actually stunning the difference between summer spending space and in season cap room the Flyers will have.
- Jsaquella

I wonder if anybody in the Flyers' front-office is currently exploring ways to circumvent the summer cap restrictions... like trade player X to another team for future considerations, then on day 1 of the new season player X gets sent back to the Flyers for a late-round pick. You wouldn't want to do it with a player that you want in camp or want to risk losing, but somebody like Matt Walker would be a good candidate for that kind of scheme.

I think the League office would have something to say about that. And I don't see any team being stupid enough to risk the penalties.

A buyout of Shelley would result in a Cap hit of 500K this year, and 300K next year. A buyout of Walker would result in a cap hit of 366,667 this year, and 666,677 next year.

IMO That seems like a much easier pill to swallow spreading it out over the two years.

Nor would they want to risk the Holmgren saying, "Yeah, uh, that whole 'trade Walker back' part? We're not interested in that anymore."

That dead cap space can't be sent down during the season, though. I'd rather have the space at the TDL and sweat out the remaining year.

In response to all of this talk: Who cares, doesn't matter, Bryz is still gonna be the goalie and that means they aren't winning anything. Thank you.

I'm sure it could be offset by including a collateral pick or prospect with Walker, but then Holmgren is the one risking a loss partway through this scheme (in addition to potential cap circumvention penalties). And then the question follows, if we're going to these lengths and efforts, why not just make a salary dump trade? It'd certainly be more incentivized for the other team involved than a circumvention scheme.

man, this offseason cap is gonna kill the flyers' chances at getting parise unless they undergo wholesale changes again. what a snafu. IMO a guy like parise is someone you should sign at all costs

Interesting. So if Bryz wasnt here they would win? Gotcha.
