It's actually stunning the difference between summer spending space and in season cap room the Flyers will have.

Assuming there will be no penalty for one way contracts stashed in the minors and assuming there will be a bonus cushion and the same LTIR rules as in this CBA, the Flyers will have decent cap room, in season.

For instance, under the circumstances above with a $69mm cap, prior to re-signing Carle and Voracek, with Pronger on LTIR and keeping Shelley and Bobrovsky, the Flyers have a combined LTIR & Cap space of $16,258,016.

Assuming $5mm for Carle and $3.4mm for Voracek, that's still just under $8mm.

I believe all a player needs to do to be "automatic" is to appear in one playoff game.
- bmeltzer

It's one game in the SCF, not the playoffs. I remember that Burke had to petition the NHL to include Parros.

Love to see Gagne get his name on it, but really to me I'd be most happy for Hextall. Just too bad it seems players have to go elsewhere to win the cup.. Brindy, Williams etc.. wish we could make it happen here!
- Hextall271

If I was rooting for LA it'd be for Hextall and John Stevens. I've had the opportunity to meet Stevens a few times. He's a great guy and it'd be nice to see him get a ring.

His NTC kicks in July 1st, I don't think the Canucks would move him. But I didn't think Philly would move Richards either! If the Sedin's were in the final year of their contract I think they may consider it, but I think they'll try and make one more run at a Cup with this core group.
- LeftCoaster

Agreed. I dont know if adding Schenn + and losing Kesler makes them a better team tomorrow. A lot depends on that +.

Luongo is as good as gone so they should get some sort of decent return in that deal.

It would be sweet if Homer could find a package deal that included Walker in it.

We're talking Flyers cap management here. And a lot of assuming going on. If I were in Vegas, I'd wager a small sum that they fubar the whole situation by Oct 1.

It's funny. Stevens is from my province here in NB. I haven't met him, but have heard he's a very nice guy.

They have had cap snafus, but that's from being an aggressive team more than incompetence.

I was at the AHL all star game, and he was being inducted in the AHL hall of fame. I happened to be sitting near him and his family and he remembered me, when I went up to congratulate him. Just a genuinely nice guy and class act.

I hope he gets another chance to coach in the NHL too. Head coach that is. I can't believe I completely forgot about the Hextall connection in LA. Especially since he was and still is my favorite player.

With that said I find it hard to root for them because of Richards and Carter winning one before we do. Nothing against them either. Yet with the Hextall connection I'm hoping (and I think they will) come through.

Yeah, I'm not especially rooting for the Kings, but I won't be upset if they win, and I'd be happy for them if they do win, just especially Hexy and Stevens.

Hey you never know. The Flyers took back Walker in the Gagne deal.

He's a real quality person -- total gentleman. Cut from the same cloth as Terry Murray away from the ice. Murph is my all-time favorite coach from strictly a standpoint of personal integrity and honesty.

I didn't agree with about 25 percent of Stevens' head coaching moves at the NHL level. He didn't always place his faith in the right players -- Jim Vandermeer jumps to mind as someone Stevens stayed almost stubbornly loyal to when he shouldn't -- but there is no questioning Stevens on a personal level.

The Flyers were basically looking to get rid of Gagne's cap hit, and the only way that Tampa would take on the salary was if the Flyers took on Walker's. The biggest issue with Walker is that he counts in the summer. Once the season starts, he's in Adirondack and off the books.

I think the trade of both carter and Richards did wonders for them.....they had become stale...I think it woke both of them up.

I will def root for the Kinga in the finals....but more for Gagne and Hextall than anyone else.

- Pyzik

sorry, but i don't buy that with carter. dude was miserable in columbus and hasn't done a whole lot in la either. he had one goal going into last night's game (0 against vancouver, 1 against st. louis). last night's "outburst" hasn't changed that - fanned shot, accidental skate deflection, and a wide open 5 on 3 tap in off a rebound. he's not hurting them, but i don't see him being any kind of difference maker yet. maybe he'll get his game going more as the series progresses. he's a streaky scorer.

if they win it all, good for them. no ill will. management decided it wasn't working out and moved them. that carter ended up in LA this year has nothing to do with them.

The fact that this guy is still under contract is annoying. Then you tact on his salary cap hit during the summer is even more of a joke. It just stinks they couldnt find a way to get rid of this guy. I remember early in the year Homer was talking him up like he was somebody, unfortunately the other GM's didn't take the bait.

The lone way to move Shelley's hit off the summertime cap would be a trade. More troubling is Matt Walker's $1.7mm counting during the summer.
- Jsaquella

I am not an expert on the contract and cap rules... I thought can't you buy out a players contract with absorbing a portion (50%) but not all of the cap hit? If they bought out Shelley and Walker that's $2.8M total, if it was 50% that $1.4M additional.

If it ends up being a kings/rags final, rooting for them is easy. Didn't care for Mike Richards the captain, but would have liked to keep him as a player. I think Schenn will be a great replacement for what Richards brought on the ice. You can tell he's still adjusting, but once it clicks, I see him being a big impact player. I salivate at the thought of he, couturier, and even JVR over the next 2-3 seasons. Can't wait until they are more confident and more mature. The flyers have a bright future for sure. It's going to be an interesting summer.

You can buy out players, but that spreads the cap hit over multiple years. So if you buy out Shelley, you carry a $500K cap hit this year, and a $300K hit next year. In the case of Walker, you;d carry a $366K hit this year and next year it would be $666,667.

The concern with both guys is the summer. When the season hits, one or both could be stashed in the AHL and be off the cap. Keeping both means that their cap liability ends on July 1st, 2013

I like both Carter and Richards, but I also like the return the Flyers got for them. I wish them success short of beating the Flyers. If they beat the Rangers or Devils, great.

Why is that? When Has Holmgren failed to ice a quality team since the Cap was instituted?

If the cap is $69M... As mentioned GM's can go over 10%, ie. $6.9M.

Pronger $4.9
Shelley $1.1
Walker $1.4
Total $7.4 that comes off the cap when the season starts.

It slightly limits what Homer can do - but, its not the end of the world. Homer can use the $7.4M to address issues as the season progresses.

ps. The is talk of amnesty clause in the next agreement. When does this get decided on? They say it would be one contract - would this be per year?

A buyout of Shelley would result in a Cap hit of 500K this year, and 300K next year. A buyout of Walker would result in a cap hit of 366,667 this year, and 666,677 next year.

Its not the end of the world but it still can limit what you want to do in the summer. Now if the Flyers want to be players on a big name free agent they may have to clear some space and that could including move a player or two.
