That was the purpose of the question, to spur discussion.

I agree, not likely they can use Bob to move up ten slots, and if they move JvR or Schenn, it's to land a top defenseman, not to move up in draft.

- Jsaquella

And a good discussion it spurred, Sir!

I still have little to no faith in this organization drafting and developing a top 4 Dman. When was the last time this happened? Pitkanen? Johnnson?
- Just5

To be fair, they haven;t exactly drafted a ton of defensemen in the first round. Pitaknen was one, and he is a top 4 defenseman in the NHL. The other first rounders were Jeff Woywitka, who never became much more than a 5 or 6 with several teams, and Luca Sbisa, who has shown flashes with Anaheim.

More worried about who they pick than the development angle, they usually don't draft defensemen well.

Assuming Justin Schultz doesn't sign with Anaheim by June 1st, can he sign with any club at any time after June 1st? I expect the Flyers to be in the conversation to get him at least.

they get a goalie and have back to back picks with a strong likelihood of good dmen being available
- flyerscup2011

Yeah, but they likely don't get a trouba, Ceci or Reinhart at 19 or 20....and they might have a shot at Luongo, which makes Bob a needless luxury

obviously not, but who saw giroux becoming one of the best players in the league when the flyers drafted him at 22?

Yep, Schultz will be a UFA on July 1st. I would expect the Flyers to have interest, for sure. I wonder if Schultz wants an immediate NHL job, or if he's willing to spend time in AHL....of course, if Timonen can't start the season, he might get a shot here.

how is it not? bob's cap hit is 1.75mm and he plays like 20 games a year. we need cap space, especially in the summer.
- flyerscup2011

Because Bobrovsky is the best young goaltender in the system right now. So let's trade him just to get a little Cap space.

I don't know a whole lot about him, but McKenzie has him ranked as his third best free agent (pretty impressive). With all the young talent on the roster, and the success of the Flyers signing college free agents (Read, Guftafsson), you would think they have as good as shot as anyone if Schultz doesn't need to stay necessarily close to home to play professional hockey.

Not the Flyers. According to more than a couple of guys who cover the league, Giroux was their THIRD choice. Their first choice was Trevor Lewis. Second was Bobby Snaguinetti.

Whats the logic in having LTIR count against the cap off season but be granted exemption status in the regular season? I don't get the rationale behind this rule.
- PT21

Because teams can't guarantee that every LTIR candidate will not be ready to play once the Season starts.

Former 2nd round pick of the Ducks, very good prospect, played NCAA hockey and is likely ready to step right into a regular NHL role next season. The only knock I have seen on him is that he needs to fill out a bit.

Well, Simon Nolet did, at least. He pushed just as hard for Giroux as Inge Hammarström (with agreement from Bill Dineen) lobbied for Forsberg in 1991 when most projections had him as a late 1st round/early 2nd round pick.

exactly, you can get a diamond in the rough at that spot in the draft

Along with Pavel Brendl for the Big E. Lindros was an incredible player. If he played in the post lockout, Lindros would be unstoppable. It was a pleasure to watch him play.

I'd rather draft a forward due to the teams recent history of success in the late first round and get our Dmen from Nashville.

Well, Schultz didn;t stay close to home to play in college. He's from Kelowna, BC, which isn't exactly the same area code as Madison, Wisconsin.
Bit of an odd path, but he's a talented kid, well rounded and capable as a two way player.

It seems some compare him to Jake Gardiner of the Leafs

Nolet was also instrumental in the Flyers drafting Gagne, wasn't he? I'd listen to that guy as often as possible

Well, thats makes more sense but why not leave it to the teams to be cap-compliant if a LTIR moves off that category to active? Like in the regular season?

I'd say no chance with Grossman on board. And thank goodness.
