That's nice and all, but what the hell happens to the cap once the new CBA is agreed to late in the summer?
- OrangeBlack27

The teams at the top of the cap will not be penalized. Their cap figure will be adjusted accordingly.

that are not pre-existing conditions. I think the over 35 thing was designed to prevent teams from signing a guy with (for example) known chronic knee (or other) problems to a long-term deal and then having him retire in 2 years without the team having had to deal with a real cap number. I still think there needs to be concern for that kind of circumvention.

But also, do you really want teams putting pressure on guys to retire when they are legitimately injured, thereby foregoing income? It isn't just big deals for guys who make a lot of dough that would be involved.

- bodiva88

They have to develop a mechanism to get teams off the hook for this situation because what if godforbid 3 or 4 guys go down on a single team with career ending injuries, now you totally tank a team for the next 4-5 years? I completely concur about the pre-existing thing but with Concussions they are like lightning you never know when they are going to hit and how often. I don't know exactly what they should do, but something needs to be done to address this.

unrealted question: what is the hold up with the team's release of the off season surgery list?

Outlaw multi-year contracts for players over 35.

Probably waiting until everyone gets their full battery of tests. From the sound of it, the MRI would have burned down with all the scanning on Flyers

I cant imagine that the players association would take too kindly to this.

hooray. with the bonus cushion accounted for, the flyers could conceivably re-sign carle, all of the necessary RFAs, and still have room for another top-six dman and/or bottom-six forward.

Me, either. I'd like to see contract terms limited to 5 years max and eliminate front loading

My guess to what's going to happen is that there will be an across the board decrease in players salaries as a percentage, to bring the player's share closer to that 50% mark.

The problem with the Flyers and the Cap really isn't the Cap space for next Season. It's the off season Cap space and how the rules change. I crunched the numbers but I have it at home. They'll show how the Flyers are going to be hampered this off season by having to carry Pronger on the off season Cap, as well as what they have to carry for RFA's, players on two way deals, etc. And Walker and Bartulis. I'll be glad to share it when I get home.

I'm thinking there's federal law that would supercede the CBA regarding age discrimination.

EDIT: Actually, why is that not an issue with over-35 contracts now?

For any age cohort. I'd also like the age at which a guy can be a UFA upped a bit. Especially for D it is too low, now. You develop a guy and he's gone.

The reason it's such a low age is because the owners decided that they absolutely had to have that hard cap, rather than the NHLPA's very logical and workable luxury tax system

I'm pretty sure every league has long contracts in pro sports but in leagues like the NFL teams have more lee way in getting out of contracts. I don't see why teams in the NHL can't have more too.

NHLPA doesn't want to give up guaranteed money. The NFL has contracts that might be 40%-60% guaranteed. Every penny of a NHL deal is guaranteed.

Yep. All those extra numbers in the off-season hurt. Obviously Pronger and Walker and Bartulis. But you can't forget guys like Bourdon and others have a portion of their cap-hits count over the summer (based on however many days they spent on the NHL roster this year, no?).

That's what I mean, it shouldn't be 100% guaranteed. There isn't a 100% guarantee the player is going to deliver on that contract either. If it isn't 100% in the NFL it doesn't make sense to me for it to be 100% in the NHL. Hey if you're playing up to par, nothing to worry about, if not, see ya later.

Why shouldn't it be 100% guaranteed? You do deals based on what you think is going to happen. Why should a player not get 100% of the money he signs for?

Say there's a guy like Leonard Weaver. He blows out his knee and gets cut. He was out killing himself for the team and got hurt and then he loses his job and he's screwed.

they have insurance and other safety nets in case that happens or at least they should. That happens to people everyday. iirc the NFL (not sure about other leagues) has a pension system in place for such a happening. If you(not saying you personally but people in general) got messed up and couldn't go back to your job you'd either be collecting your employer's pension or social security and or both, or finding another career field.
