But in the case of Carle, they should be able to process it as an extension. As I understand it, during the season you can not have a payroll over what the cap currently is for next year, and thats the reason we cant sign Carle. We already have all the current cap money spoken for with Grossmann, and JVR's extensions. As soon as the NHL says the Cap goes up, then the Flyers can use that extra space to sign Carle.
- RooNosHockey

Yep. The cap doesn't actually go up until July 1st. Which means they can't officially sign Carle until then. Same thing happened with Hartnell. They traded for his rights and agreed to terms, but the deal couldn't be official until July 1st.

What do folks think would be a good value for Carle? I would not mind keeping him if we dont over pay. We need to have room to resign Jakob and get a bigtime blueliner.

Homer said the signing hadn't happened yet because of "tagging" space. I'll admit I have left tagging up to MJL to understand. But a straightforward (if that's even possible) explanation would be welcome.

I know everyone hates these, but I enjoy doing it... My dream off-season would see the Flyers Trade JVR, Cousins, Coburn, and a First for Weber. Resign Carle for around 5 million. Resign Voracek around 3 million, and Resign Weber for around 7 million. Then hopefully you can land Parise for somewhere in the range a 6.5 mill cap hit. It should leave us about 1.6 million in cap after pronger and Shelly are LTIR and sent down.

Parise, Giroux, Voracek
Hartnell, Schenn, Briere
Read, Couturier, Simmonds
Wellwood, Talbot, Rinaldo

Weber-Timonen
Carle-Grossmann
Gusteffson-Meszaros

** I just realized that each line has 2 players confortable playing center. That would be good for people getting kicked out of faceoffs.

I think Tim nailed it on this one. Agree with him about both Bryzgalov and Bobrovsky's seasons.

Agreed and I was surprised to see it. Comon perception to blame the goalie and to talk about historical problems in net for the flyers is just tired. I got into a few arguments over the last week about Bryz and the NJ series, and frankly it was very annoying.

I think the impression the "under market value" comment left with many was that Carle may be had with a cap hit just under $5m. When it comes to discounts, if that's the appropriate word to use, it's kind of nebulous. Who knows how friendly Carle (and his agent) are feeling, right?

Basically, a team can only "tag" for the next season up to maximum amount on the current salary cap before the new cap takes effect on July 1. This includes LTIR players and all potential bonuses.

With contract extensions and raises kicking in for several players -- JVR, Coburn, Grossmann -- and with Pronger's salary on the books, the Flyers have virtually maxed out their tagging space. That's one of the few downsides of having relatively few free agents this offseason.

$4.9M sounds like a lot to me for him considering our available cap space and what he brings to the table. In an ideal world, I would prefer to figure out our other pieces in free agency first and see what we have left for #25. I know this is not possible, though as if we wait that long, he will test the market and the price will go higher. . .

Hopefully the new cba addresses over 35 players who suffer career ending injuries. It should be easy enough to distinguish between a player who is being released because they stink or trying to circumvent the cap and a player who is unable to play due to a concussion for example.

if they don't re-sign carle, the better have a damn good replacement lined up who can play 23 minutes a night.

That's nice and all, but what the hell happens to the cap once the new CBA is agreed to late in the summer?

One thought I've had is if Holmgren explores the trade route for a new #1 defenseman, a roster defenseman may be a needed part of the package we're sending. Having him on hand leaves us with four top four defensemen (Carle, Coburn, Meszaros, Grossmann) to choose from. You are right that it's a lot of money to tie up in the defense, though.

That's the rub. If they Let Carle walk, they will either have to pay a replacement more than $5mm or they will have to trade an asset to acquire a replacement.

Yeah...uh, no. Gus could be a real solid sixth defenseman next year, he's not going to be a 20-25 minute guy

that are not pre-existing conditions. I think the over 35 thing was designed to prevent teams from signing a guy with (for example) known chronic knee (or other) problems to a long-term deal and then having him retire in 2 years without the team having had to deal with a real cap number. I still think there needs to be concern for that kind of circumvention.

But also, do you really want teams putting pressure on guys to retire when they are legitimately injured, thereby foregoing income? It isn't just big deals for guys who make a lot of dough that would be involved.
