I am hopeful that SOMETHING can get done.

Staal is worth a ton and has enormous upside, but I don't know if he's a number one on a contender.

He is amazing defensively and on the PK. He also can be above average offensively. Can be streaky.

To answer your questions from an Oilers perspective:

1. What would you give up for Jordan Staal?
If the Penguins re-sign Staal to a long-term deal before moving him, I'm offering up Gagner and Magnus Paajarvi. I'm not giving up the 1st overall pick (Nail Yakupov) for him.

2. What do you want for Staal?
If I'm the Penguins, and assuming Staal won't sign a contract extension for me, what I want for Staal is ideally a Top 10 draft pick and a 2nd asset. The Pens are hella deep with D prospects, so maybe I'm looking for a replacement 3rd line center.

3. Is he a legit #1?
Hard to say, as he's played his career focusing more on being a success as a two-way guy. In the #1 center role, I'm not sure he has as much offensive upside as some seem to think. He can be a 30 goal, 60pts center, which is average points-wise.

4. How much would you pay for Staal?
I assume you're referring to contract? If the Oilers could sign him next season as a UFA, and if the Oil would be signing him because they need a 2nd line center with size to back up Nuge in the #1 role, I'd be offering five years, $5mil per. He wouldn't sign with Edmonton though, as there are plenty of dumb GM's out there who would overpay and offer more than that.

There's depth at defense, and there's talent. The Leafs on-ice product only showcases one of those. I think people seem to forget that when talking about them trading from a depth perspective.

That contract is an insane. Leafs should look at aquiring Timmy thomas for the next 2-3 years while Reimer and scrivens develope properly. With average goaltending this past season the Leafs would have made the dance

My top choices for goalies would be'
Thomas
Kipper
Luongo

- billyberg10

I don't care how long the length is if it gets you into the playoffs, and win a cup. That's the big picture. Thomas is on the down hill and Lou's contract is just as bad as bryz's contract.

You seriously think that is fair value for Staal? Gagner had 2 good games in his career. Shero would hang up immediately. I think the Pens are the only team that has a shot at him for 5 per.

I wouldn't mind Timmy Thomas. He's still got some gas in the tank and would be a good mentor for Reims. Kipper would probably cost us too much and I'd stay far away from Luongo's contract. I'd look into signing Vokoun for one or two years as UFA before considering Lu.

Again, Pittsburgh's goal is to compete for Cups. How does resigning Staal to a long term deal and then dealing him to Edmonton for Gagner and MPV help Pittsburgh in any way to achieve this goal? It detracts. You are trading one of the best two-way forwards in the game, who would be a second line center on most teams, for a third rate player in Gagner and a guy who regressed from one year and then couldn't find his way int he lineup on the worst team in the NHL the next? Pass on this.

Remember, this is the same blogger who thinks Hemsky should get a mid-first round pick in return and Omark a third rounder. He truly has no clue on value.

His idea is like me suggesting Kennedy, Tangradi, Bourtozzo, and a second rounder for Eberle.

Seriously. The guy has one game as Midas and all of a sudden he's Mario Lemieux? LOL. And it makes me laugh how everybody jumps down Kadri's throat....he sucks, he'll never make it, he's had chances, he's a career minor-leaguer, blah blah blah. But nobody says a word about Paajarvi, who has done less than nothing despite being given the same if not better opportunities than Kadri.....and they were drafted three picks apart.

Take bryz. Get D to make him look like a superstar. I.e Mike Smith. He's better then what you have now, especially when goalies are hard to find. Stop worrying about offense, work on D.

I missed Leighton's mom in the playoffs this year. She had a nicer rack than Holtby's.
