So flyers coaching then

Oli,

Yes, we have been having this discussion for the last couple of days.

There isn't any one person or player to blame.

It was a team wide loss.

Yes, this includes the coach.

Hello all. I had been banned. By my wife. Once the PO are over, I have to give her some attention, since I am so vital to the teams success(her words with eyes rolled) . I think the season was a successful one. I am equally excited about the future. I love how Bryz played better each round. He got passed the first round for the first time. Now work on the second next year. I'm not one for keeping Carle, however, if he is really cheap then go for it. I think our D will be sweet next year if you can add a stud. Hopefully Mezz stays healthy.

Grossmann-Coburn
Kimmo-Stud
Carle-Mezz

Could be some good stuff. Add a dman and maybe another sniping winger. This team really doesn't need much.

Harts-G-V
Simmer-Danny-Sniper
JVR-Schenner-Talbot
Rinaldo-Cooter-Wellwood

Future looks good. As long as Bryz puts in the work to be better, which I think he will, good teams only tinker to become great teams. Even if we have to trade JVR to get something for D, Homer will makes us much better.

Flyers = High powered offense with a goalie making specatcular saves keeping his team in games

Devils - good defense with an untested goalie who fumbles pucks

Something doesn't add up here.

A good defense can stump an offense sure, but a high powered offense should be able to find a way to get to a goalie who doesn't seem comfortable.
Was the problem coaching or is the offense only high powered when the net is empty and the defense is as porous as their own?

- Oilhab

Who can deny that the Flyers were a high powered offense. They averaged 5 goals against the Pens, and I believe they were 2nd in the NHL in goals scored....I could be wrong here. I'm just too lazy to look it up. The Flyers' offense was one of the best in the league.

BUT

The Devils play some of the best defense in the league. We can go back and forth with you saying "Well...Shirley...if the Flyers' offense is so high powered, they could get the puck on net!!" to which I respond, "Defense wins championships. The Devils stopped the Flyers cold!"

You said you watched the games. It was all Devils. Collectively, in games 2-5, the Devils controlled I'd say 300 of the 340 minutes of hockey played. The Flyers high powered offense was either pinned in their own zone, dumping the puck in only to see it volleyed right back by Brodeur, or running into the brick wall that is the Devils defense, resulting in a Matt Carle-esque muffin shot from the perimeter that I could save. Like I've said....on the other end of the ice, some quirky Russian is standing on his head. I keep going back to that. That's why I think Bryz was at least on par with Marty.

Going to back what you said, you missed one glaring detail:

Flyers = An OUTPLAYED high powered offense with a goalie making specatcular saves keeping his team in games

In this series, the offense, although capable of being high powered wasn't, because they were outeverythinged that was hockey related. Against the Devils, the Flyers offense was subpar, not high powered.

I don't see him coming back. I honestly don't want him to. His family is more important then hockey at this junction of his life. He is a HOFer no doubt. He needs to just go enjoy life now.

It's kind of assumed that he will. Both the organization and its fans are envisioning a team without Prongs

Not unless the CBA changes because it would cripple the Flyers with the cap. Will he play again? Probably not. But I'll keep hoping against hope. And if he can't, he'll be LTIRd for the duration.

It's not criticizing him that bothers most, it's suggesting he belongs in the KHL. Exaggerate much?

I have no problem with people who come in here to have a discussion about any player from any perspective. I do have a problem with trolls:

a troll is someone who posts inflammatory...messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum..., with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response...

No it's PCS. Hasn't improved, apparently.

We think he got a concussion and then played with it for a few games. Since then, he's allegedly been doing awfully....

Forgive the silly question, but if Timmonen is looking to stick around after this contract, can they tear this one up and renegotiate a deal that would lower Kimmos cap hit for next year? It'd be foolish for Kimmo since he's due a big number next year, but Im just talking in "theory".
- aosplayo

No. Deals are only restructured in the NFL, where contracts are not guaranteed.

I don't so much hate the Rangers as a team. There are a lot of players on the team that I admire, starting with their captain, several defensemen, a couple of particularly likeable ex-Flyers (Fedotenko and Biron), and Lundqvist.

However, I personally dislike their coach and their GM. Tortorella is a bully of a coach. Overall, I think he's a good coach -- very good with Xs and Os and getting favorable matchups. But his hubris gets in the way sometimes. He is so convinced of his own genius that he's actually gotten in the way of his own team's success more than once both in Tampa and New York.

Sather is still living off the reputation of building 1980s Edmonton dynasty an has made more bad than good decisions in the last quarter century. I find Slats' insufferable much of the time.

I also dislike the misplaced haughtiness of a large percentage of the fan base. This is a team that has one Stanley Cup since 1940, is 18 years removed from the last one and still has yet -- although they still very well may do so after Game 7 -- to advance past the second round since 1997.

Finally, I think the New York media (as well as Canadian) were the ones who created and still perpetuate the image of the Flyers' team as a goon squad . They also love to play up the boorishness of Philadelphia fans, when there is equal percentage of idiots -- and a larger number because of the sheer size of their metro area -- in New York.

So there you have it. I respect the Rangers as a team but I can never root for them under any circumstances.

- bmeltzer

Bill I thought I was perhaps just being a homer with my dislike for the Rangers. Knowing that you are probably the most objective person to put words into print, now I feel vindicated for my dislike of that team and the as you put it—Haughtiness— of a fanbase whose team hasn't done jack squat in over a decade. Thank you for the work you do!
