Briere played on a team in Buffalo that played a tight checking counter attack style of play. Briere racked up 95 points and led the entire NHL in even Strength points. And was a plus player. Briere can certainly play on the Wing. Let's see what JVr can do when he's healhty. I also don't see Talbot as a 4th line player, but depending on depth, he may have to.

That line was Pominville-Briere-Hecht and those 2 are very sound defensively. I don't remember this tight checking system. I remember 4 very fast, small but high-skill lines.

Personally, I'd prefer to time travel back and get Bobby Orr in his prime. C'mon, if we're going to dream let's really dream!

The Sabres played a defense first, counter attack style. And Briere thrived in it. And he could here also with the right linemates.

Problem is everyone is focusing on the forwards....they should spend more time focussing on the defense....

Quick question if we miraculously managed to swindle weber do you guys think suter would be more inclined to sign here? Dump Kimmo and briere and the numbers work. That would be hilarious

- Philly1980

No way nashville lets Suter walk and trades Weber. They would have to have a deal in place with Suter before trading Weber. Which IMO would mean they would have to agree on a deal with a team first, tel Suter that your trading Weber so they can keep you, and will be getting much better on offense as a result. If Suter says no, then the deal for Weber is a no.

What if Weber wants out? I dont think Suter is going to sign with Nashville no matter the deal...I think he wants out also.

Weber is a RFA. He doesn't have to sign anything, but all Nashville has to do is make a qualifying offer, and if anyone makes him an offer, Nashville matches it... Then they can take thier time and trade him during the season or at the TDL. I dont think Weber would hold out, but even if he does, doesn't he have to honor his contract before becoming a ufa?

If I'm nashville I let Suter walk and focus on retaining Weber beyond this upcoming season. Can't imagine they can keep both and I think Weber is more of a difference maker.

Im not sure about that. I dont think it will get to a point where someone will put a bid in for him if he doesnt resign. GM's can but dont do that. I do think they will be listening to trade offers. I dont think he is tradeable at the deadline...the price required to get him at the TDL would probably rip apart a contending team...

He'll sign a 1 year contract this offseason (or a long term deal with Nashville, making further discussion mot), and then be a UFA next offseason.

If Weber doesn't want to play in Nashville, why would he sign an Offer Sheet?

Just posting because I heard it is a possibility that Kimmo retires this summer or next year. I know Bill has a good sense what goes on with Finland and Sweden but could Kimmo accept a job with the organization working with Flyers prospect defensemen or would that violate something because he is part-owner of a team over there?

Just wondering if anyone had an info on this. While Kimmo's body seems to be breaking down on him, he knows how to play defenseman and be in the right position despite his size.

That is my point though. He doesnt have to sign anything. but my question is, if he holds out all of next year, doesnt he have to still have that 1 year of RFA?

You're absolutely right about Hecht and Pominville. Their defensive capabilities helped Briere. JVR is not a good player to play alongside Briere for defensive purposes

I am ok with bringing Carle back but if I was the GM I am not breaking the bank to do it. I count on a bit of a home town discount and offer 4.75M to 5.25 and if Carle's agent balks then see ya later.
I doubt he gets signed but that's the top end.
The alternative is to go shopping via the trade route.
I would target very good prospective Dmen who other teams are getting a little impatient with.
I wouldn't trade JVR as of yet. In final player meetings I let it be known the inconsistency and uninspiring play at times will not be tolerated.
I would challenge his manhood so to speak and his desire to be a top player.
I would move up in the draft if everything played out right. If Reinhart is available at 10 I offer Tampa Bob and our first round pick and maybe Manning. Then look to sign a serviceable backup goalie.
Resign Jake, resign Jagr if you can get him 1M or under for a year.
Go after a solid 3rd line physical winger who can really bank bodies and is defensively responsible.

Obviously you have to give to get but I am very reluctant to move young pieces like Schenn, Read (such a cheap cap hit for 2 more years) and even JVR when you have a 40 yo Jagr possibly gone and only here one more yr if he does come back, Hartnell a UFA after next year (he loves it here but you never know what will happen) and Briere getting older.

Not positive here, but if Pronger were to retire he would walk away from nearly 5 years worth of money while also forcing that cap hit on the Flyers. If he stays and is LTIR'd he gets paid, and the Flyers dont take on his cap hit... Id be extremely surprised if he does in fact retire.

If he retires the Flyers are screwed with the cap. The whole hit stays for the balance of the deal. So I'd doubt that is it.

This is the usual end of year state of the franchise presser and they said they'd have an update on Pronger. It is not a Pronger press conference.
