If you actually watch his skating in the defensive zone and trace his steps throughout the series, he actually spells out (frank) DEFENSE. One letter for every goal against while he's on the ice.

just waiting for snider to speak out on this so homer does what needs to be done.

Sounds like Carle will be back.

With a very limited number of good UFA d-men, we are going to find out what the rest of the League thinks about Matt Carle.

He was absolutely dreadful defensively in these playoffs, but maybe this season's injuries had something to do with that?

He's obviously an elite finisher, I'm just not sure if his offensive output exceeds his defensive deficiencies.

- OrangeBlack27

Well, let me ask it to you this way. If you are in a playoff game and need a clutch goal, do you want Briere on your side or the other?

Actually, I now think he's going to re-sign with the Flyers ahead of July 1 when the cap for next year becomes official. Holmgren said he's talked with Carle's agent, the demands are reasonable-- maybe even below market value -- and he thinks something will get done as soon as tagging space no longer prevents it.

He was asked, but declined to talk about any injuries he played through in playoffs. Said it's part of hockey and players on all teams deal with it.
- bmeltzer

Doesn't surprise me. I think it was really obvious he was laboring. he was getting knocked off of the puck so easily.

Both.

I'd definitely want him on my side if I needed a goal. I'd also want him on the ice on the other side if I was down by one.

Seriously, Danny could play for me. I'd just be sure that I'd play him with complimentary players in the right situations.

That's crazy. Without question you want Briere on your team when you need a big goal in the playoffs.

That's great news if it happens. And bodes well for the Flyers future.

Exactly.

Also, if he were on another team, we'd never be down one, IMO.

Rumor has it the Sabres will offer Carle a 8 year, $7.5m per contract. Sabres are known to be value players so this should shock nobody.

I get the loyalty/veteran/mentor/babysit angle, but...

65 points for 6.5 million does not qualify as bang for the buck.

- LW2530

Until the playoffs start and you are getting the NHL's leading goal scorer in the postseason since the lockout. I'd rather have that than a guy who puts up big RS numbers and then packs it in during the postseason.

Where have you heard this rumor from? Because the numbers are so ridiculous, that I doubt very much that it's credible.

So you would rather have the NHL's top playoff goal scorer over the last seven years on the other side because he has some defensive matchup issues?

Sorry, but I vehemently disagree. I wouldn't want a whole roster full of such players, but in a playoff series, I want Briere on my side every time.

I was never against Carle resigning as long as it works with our cap situation. People seem to forget that top 4 defensemen don't grow on trees.

When Briere is on the ice, there is a chance he scores for you.

However, when he is on the ice there is a chance the 5 guys from the other team are going to score... 5-1 ratio... I'll take him on the other team..

There was a little sarcasm in what I said... Briere has been clutch in the playoffs, but we have to take everything into account.... When Briere is on the last year of his contract... Who are we not going to sign because of cap reasons? Giroux, Read, Couturier, Schenn, or Meszaros?

Well, since it isn't his job to cover five guys by himself, I wouldn't call it a fair comparison. Not saying Briere doesn't have issues against bigger forwards defensively or fail to pick up some trailers. He does. But when you weigh all considerations, I want him on my side in a big game.

Well I'm looking at reality and not some made up ratio or formula. There are how many other players on the ice when he is on?

None of them. You don't know what the future holds. Who's going to still be here, what deals are going to be made between now and then. There are so many variables. Your getting way ahead of things.

I believe she was bitten by a dog as a young child.

Are there suspensions on here for simply being an ah0le?

Doesn't look like Danny cares about much besides scoring goals. If he really cares that much, wouldn't he have at least gained a clue about how to play anywhere outside of the offensive zone?
- OrangeBlack27

I'm a Briere critic but I'll never doubt his level of care. I'm sure he cares I just don't see the value at the cap hit he brings. For that amount of money you can get another talbot and pronger.
