But how often did players like Danny or JVR get punished for loitering instead of backchecking during the regular season? See how Dale Hunter has thrown away the "star player will do what he needs to do and the rest of the team will compensate mantra." If the coach says something that individual players are not doing, isn't it on the coach to set a reward/punishment scheme that reinforced good behavior and punish bad behavior?

I think Lavy seems to be a great motivator and passion guy and heart guy, but less of a mind and discipline guy.

Your right I like it....Briere's performance in Game 2 was horrid and I just don't understand it. Crap like that should be punished in the regular season so it doesnt happen in the playoffs

Wish they had started the 2nd round 2 days later so they could used that confidence and momentum. Not necessarily the reason they lost, but I think it could have gone a long way in helping them this series.

So I guess he wasnt playing the mind game with Giroux when he called him the best player in the world? Good point.
- Just5

I was hoping for a bit more than a remark at a news conference. In general, I don't see discipline being a Lavy trademark. How many times did he say anything about the patented Briere high-sticking calls? I know they did not happen much this playoffs, but thats besides the point.

As far as I can tell, from NHL.com (Brodeur) and Quanthockey.com (league average), it would be 14 out of 18 seasons.

Having been goalie obsessed (fan and as a player) since 1971 (as well as bleeding orange and black), the only goalie I would consider taking above Brodeur is Hasek. You can't just say that Brodeur benefited from their system. That is a cop out. The team was clearly built around Brodeur and the system benefitted from him as much as he benefitted from the system.

If you still think the primary motivator for most elite pro athletes is money, I do feel sorry for you.

I should ban you on principle. That's my least favorite thing about Eagles fans. Their poaching on every other event to spew their stupid chant.

which would rather be? a retired player who won multiple championships, but not enough money to support him for the rest of his life, or a guy who never won a championship, got close, was highly respected by his peers and has money to burn for the rest of his life, i'd pick b

I've heard it's only 50/50 Kimmo even returns next year. He's apparently going to need 2-3 surgeries.

That's not the question here, is it?

Which would you rather be at that moment? A guy who's going on to the next round or a guy who just was eliminated. I really love the idea that they aren't human beings with real in the moment feelings. If everyone here were thinking long-term and full-life all the time, there'd be no forums.

The NHL is not reverting back to the clutching and grabbing style. Go back and watch some of the games when that was the style of play. It's no where close to that era.

First of all, we'll clarify something. I never said a Coach and his system doesn't have an impact. So it's inccorrect for you to imply that I have.

There are a lot of reasons why a team plays better under a new Coach. Most of it is motivation and knowing that they got the Coach fired, and they may be next. It's a kick in the pants. teams can tune a Coach out and a new voice is needed. New Coaches come in and use players differently, place them in better suited roles. Top players can play better for one Coach versus another. And on and on. And sometimes it is a change in style of play.

If what you say is true, then the Devils and Deboer's system, will always beat the Flyers under Laviolette and his system. Because Deboer has the better system.
Explain how this happens. Bylsma takes over for Therrien, makes some changes, and the Pens have great success. What happened this year? Did Bylsma change his system, so they're no longer as good?

What NHL Coach has the best system? And what is that system?

- MJL

Yes in fact if Lavi does not adjust the game to match up better against teams like Boston, NYR, and NJ... then yes they will continue to lose to them.

Bylsma was outcoached in the first round. He couldnt get his team to play diciplined and when he realized he couldnt out score us, he should have adjuested to a more defensive game, like they did in last years playoffs.

If what you said is true, then Holmgren wouldn't have made all the player changes he made. He would have changed Coaches again. It's simply about who is the better team.
- MJL

No, the better team doesnt always win. It's usually the more motivated and disciplined teams... which comes down to coaching.

I think your metric for being 'outcoached' and his are not the same.
