I wonder if Crosby helps out the pens and takes a pay cut?? Say 7.5? Then, get Martin out and that clears about 6.2mil...who knows maybe Crosby's cut influences Malkin to also take a bit less?? It's not like 7.5 is bad money...that's top 10 player cash... |

A 23 year old established player, borderline star, who put up 50 pts in 62 games while seeing little powerplay time. a borderline selke trophy winner. And he is yet to get into his prime years. You are really really overvaluing the value of a first round pick. I've heard that Yak is a "sure" thing but so was daige, johnson, etc. I pick is always a gamble. It would take a package of the pick and a blue chip prospect or an established 2 or 3 center to even consider this deal... I know that he may be able to leave next year, but image what teams would trade for him at the deadline? (personally I think staal is to big an asset to lose, as awful as it seems, I think malkin or crosby shoud be the ones to go). Only hope for the oilers fans sakes that tambellini ain't in the same mind of the fans on here, but so far, multile first overalls in a row and still no playoffs. |

to think that EDM would have to add something for the #1 pick is laughable. if anything, we would need to add something (not named morrow, despres, harrington, or bennett) |

Crosby's deal will greatly influence whether or not Staal sticks around. |

The problem is, those numbnuts think Despres, Morrow, Harrington or Bennett are a must to be added with Staal for the number one pick. That is absurd. Remember, this kid is Malkin, Bure and Ovechkin all wrapped into one.

As a fan of both the Oilers and the Penguins I would be quite happy if Staal stayed in Pittsburgh and Yakupov went to the Oilers. Which realistic is the most likely option.
From an Oilers perspective it's up to management to determine if they want to continue rebuilding or start looking for wins. Drafting Yakupov is continueing to rebuild. Don't get it twisted in 3-5 years the Oilers will be great if all the prospects pan out as planned. But a team that had Hall #1, RNH #1, Eberle #22, Ganger #6, PRV #10, and Dubnyk #14 still finished 29th, adding another #1 pick far from guarentee's instant wins. He still has to learn about how to play in the NHL which is different from the OHL.
If they want wins sooner rather than later they would seriously consider Staal. He's an actual #2 center for the Oilers. He is a much better player than Horcoff and he is more well rounded that Gagner who does compare offensively but falls off in the other aspects (PK, experience, leadership, size). A 2nd line of PRV, Staal and Hemsky improves the team more than another prospect does.
At some point if the Oilers actually want to win and avoid falling into the Islander trap, they might need to start thinking about trading some of the prospects for guys who are in the NHL. |

Sharp and a 3rd for Staal.
Hawks get #2 C, and the Pens get a top 6 sniper for Crosby or Malkin to dish to. |

What was actually the problem with PRV. Promising rookie season and then sucked ass the next? Does he need a change of scenery?
Also, aren't the majority of good prospects in Edmonton already up? Outside of Klefbom and maybe Musil, that farm system seems somewhat barren. |

Not sure with PRV I think it was just a sophmore slump. There were slim chances that Hall, Ebs, RNH, and PRV were all going to explode someone had to have the slump.
Their AHL team has some guys like Tuebert and Pitlick, and they have some players spread throughout the CHL like Blain, Davidson, Gernat, Pelss, and Reider who might turn out. They are in a position where their best prospects are already in the NHL with Hall, Ebs, and RNH being so young. |

The Players Association will have more say on Crosby's contract than he or his agent. It will not go down unfortunately. My only hope is they get away with a cheaper salary because he's now an injury risk. |

i just still dont understand that if we must trade staal for salary reasons, how can we afford to bring an equal amount back into the fold and not be the same problem?

Sharp is a really nice player and he'd be a great fit on this team. But I think we would be kicking ourselves in 3 years. |

that is true. i guess if we were forced to move him for salary type reasons that is the type of player we would need to focus on. i still have hope the situation can be salvaged though. even if he wants his big money run, he could still do a 3 year deal here for somewhere between 15 and 18 mil, and by the time thats over be all of 25-26 and then have a big cash in somewhere
