He could've just said we got a grinder to play the 3rd line center duties with cup experience and were able to get a player we feel is on par with Hodgson as far as potential prospect wise. It was a good hockey trade for both teams.
He aired dirty laundry to the public and that is never a good thing. - dadeadhead
True. While he demonstrated a lack of class, I'd be a little worried if I was a Sabres fan. Kind of like when Bryzgalov's former teammates trashed him.

He was put on the spot by the media. His comments were unnecessary and a bit overkill, but not untrue, though the problems were more with his camp (dad, agent) than Cody, himself.
To be fair to Hodgson, the Canucks did mis-handle his injury, and AV's comments a few years back about Cody faking the injury were more out-of-line than Gillis's end of year explanation.

I think we can take comfort in not having Vigneault there, get back to me after next season.

Well said.... I also agree that Gillis comments were unnecessary... but not unprovoked... our media and newspapers have been ripping on the trade since it happened.
Cody is probably a good kid... but its obvious he was letting outside influences affect his decisions. He wanted to take a short cut instead of earning his ice time... but I do think it was rather silly to at least not attempt Cody on a line with Kesler and Booth.
The trade is done... words were said... and most people are saying Roberts is out of line.. not Gillis.

Calling Gillis a Dud is out of line. Again just say I dk where that comes from. In my dealings with Hodgson he's shown great desire and determination to become a more complete Hockey player.

I agree here, the AV bit just made this seem like exacerbating a poorly handled situation on all sides. And I have an obvious reason for pointing fingers in the direction I am, but I also have cause to think he's going to do well in what will be a better situation for him here.

He has desire, no question, that's part of the reason he wanted to move somewhere he could play a larger role. As myself and Kneughter said, the issues were more with Hodgson's camp, not Hodgson himself. I'm always going to be a fan.
he was off 5 for 5 and they wanted drury more and drury wanted them less. he left "by choice" when he was told they were going in another direction. the sabres were the ones that botched this one. we don't really know what we have for post-season production because most of our stars get injured or don't show up in the playoffs and the young guys don't have another of a resume to really let us see either way.
so when people say "oh i miss danny" yeah most people wanted drury over briere, but why i god's name would we want to have to pick? we wanted both to stay because they were both good 5 years ago and 1 of them still is. i think we would have been a heck of a lot better off if we didn't jetison the two most exciting players on our team at the time, just to save a little money...

AV seems to handle young players poorly, yet, for some reason guys like Kesler, Edler, Sedins, Burrows all reached the next level with him as coach. I have a mixed opinion of AV. Definitely didn't like his comments on Hodgson's injuries.

Yeah, I'm not saying he's a terrible coach or anything (I leave that for a handful of Nucks posters) but that was kind of dumb. What you say internally and what you say to the media needs to be separated, period. Ultimately, if it puts a chip on Hodgsons shoulder and he can use it to grow, all good.

Agreed.
AV, Gillis, and Roberts handled this all wrong.
His dad needs to shut his mouth as well. Your son is 22yrs old, time to cut the cord man.
His agent well they're all douche bags so it is what it is.

AV had 2 medical staffs telling him that Cody's injury wasn't an issue. They were wrong and AV shouldn't have said anything about it, but it was pretty innocuous. The bigger issue was the failure of the medical staff(s), not AV speculating on why a kid who is not supposed to be injured isn't as good as advertised.
All this stuff gets blown way out of proportion. Gillis didn't say anything about Cody other than that he didn't want to play in Vancouver and dealing with his issues was time consuming. So they dealt him.
He's a good player who wanted a bigger role than he was getting. And now he's yours. Enjoy him.
