Buffalo's #'s are half that and they sell out all 41 games. Season tickets make up 16,000 of the 18,690 seats and there is a 5 year waiting list. And don't give me any crap its all Canadians. Its not. They go, but not in those #'s.
Quebec's #'s are about half of Buffalo's, and everyone seems to think thats a great idea. |

Who could forget his claims that the player ratings in EA NHL were a legit way to compare players in real life. |

I agree. Tickets and apparel will FLYYYYYYY off the shelves. Instant in town rivalry. However, if I'm a business man, getting lets say 50-75k tv viewers in a new market in the US has more overall value than just taking fans away from the Leafs and shifting them to a fanbas base about 2 and 15/16's north east of the ACC.
Lets face it, you arent going to create "new" hockey fans in Toronto by adding another team. Its just not possible. |

Place a new team across the street from the ACC and it still makes money. |

The NHL should pair with NBA teams so they can share the arena. I still don't get Columbus other than the "20 million live within a 3 drive" rationale. Cleveland would have been a better option. They at least have four other pro sports. Columbus has Ohio State.
Why Bettman expanded to markets without other pro sports (or at least a few pro sports) is a mystery. Seattle had the NBA, Milwaukee does, Cleveland does, Portland does. How about Indianapolis? But Anaheim?? Nashville? Carolina? I understand trying to take advantage of a market without a competing sport, but... - pmg2008
What you fail to understand is that there's no such thing as a pre-existing market. We are JUST on the verge of seeing the first generation of born-and-raised fans in each of those southern markets (well, Nashville and Carolina) and in both cases, success is coming.
Carolina, as a market, is FAR exceeding what Hartford managed to do. |

Sure, but if you go into pro sports as an owner looking to make a profit, you've already failed. That comes secondary. Aside from a few teams, sports teams should be treated as pet projects and luxury items, not moneymakers |

I think its in part better, more active marketing by the new NHL. And a Stanley cup doesn't hurt.

NHL has been on national TV in one form or another in the US since 1972 and remains a niche market sport. Why would I care about finding another dozen fans in KC if I can sell my product for a great price on TSN, Rogers and CBS in the GTA? |

Partly, but it's up to each individual team to sell themselves to the market. That, and added local investment, etc. |

Buffalo is 30 minutes from the border. It has been a franchise for 40 years. There is no comparison. KC has had a hockey team (the Chiefs); they were moved to Colorado then NJ. At the time KC was awarded a franchise in 1972 (same year as Washington), they shared an arena with the KC Kings of the NBA.
Here's the kicker and I wish people would learn from history (thanks Wikipedia):
With a combined 32 teams between the NHL and the rival World Hockey Association, the talent available to stock the new teams in Kansas City and Washington was stretched thin. In their first season, the Capitals would set an NHL record for futility, losing 67 of 80 games, and only winning one on the road. The Scouts fared only marginally better, and the 1974 expansion was widely seen as having been a mistake.
The Scouts suffered from inflated player costs, a weak ownership group, an economic downturn in the Midwest, poor performance on the ice and poor attendance. The Scouts drew an average of just 8,218 fans during their two years in 17,000-seat Kemper Arena (at a time when the league average was approximately 13,000). The team's 37 owners, buried in debt, mounted a season-ticket drive to raise more revenue. However, when only 2,000 people bought tickets, they concluded that the Scouts were not a viable venture and opted to sell. While the Capitals were far worse on the ice, they were far better capitalized, and their owner, Abe Pollin, had the resources and the patience to absorb the massive losses.
This, after just two years.
They got an IHL team, but they left in 2001. There is NO hockey in KC now.
Talent stretched thin. I think this is a major problem for the NHL currently. There are 2 to 4 too many teams.
Of interest, the KC Kings moved to Sacramento in 1985, failing to find success in this market.
So let's try it again...
