it's not like a bad contract has ever prevented a team in dire straits to make a deal
Scott Gomez Tom Pyatt and Michael Busto, to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Christopher Higgins, Doug Janik, Ryan McDonagh, and Pavel Valentenko |

So, because Montreal took on a poopty contract which they regret now, means the Leafs should too? |

How does that justify anything? Bob Gainey made that deal. And Toronto wasn't even remotely involved. |

I would only trade Luongo for players that have barely played on your team if a prospect plays atleast one year in TO he has no value |

I dont think anyone here really truly understands how ridiculous Luongos contract is.
If he is traded, I think he goes to Tampa. If Tampa can somehow send back Leclavier+ for Luongo and Kesler, its a done deal. |

Vancouver might be willing to take on Lecavalier but I think he's a better fit in Montreal given their latest battles with the "French" aspect of their franchise. They could pay off Lecavalier's contract in 5 years with jersey sales alone. Plus, they could use a big center. His price tag sucks but they have money.
So long as they can dump Gomez in exchange, they could make it work. Gomez works nicely for Tampa Bay because, while his cap hit is 7+ million, his actually salary is actually in the 4 to 5 million range. They would save tens of millions of dollars.
Lecavalier isn't good enough to get Luongo AND Kesler by the way. That would never happen. |

Finally, so you agree that LUongo's contract is horrific as well.
Now that everyone is on the same page, we can finally have a discussion about this.
Now please run back and tell the rest of canucks fans what you've learned here today and why they won't be getting a first round draft pick, a top prospect and a top six forward for luongo.
Thanks |

i have to agree with you. Getting the sedin sisters was very stupid.
Probably should of tried to get some players with actual passion and leadership instead.
Oh well |

Burke might be a horrible judge of talent but he's been hell bent against "cap circumventing contracts" just like Luongo's. The reason he didn't get in on the Brad Richards sweepstakes was because of how long he would have to sign him for. The last thing Burke would do is acquire the exact type of contract he detests. |

I guess we will see when the trade goes down... as always each fan base tends to over value their own players. You say that Vancouver would have to essentially "pay" a team to take Luongo off their hands by adding in a prospect?? At least I was trying to be realistic... - Slacker
Luongo at 5.5 even for the next 5 years, is a commodity worth something.
Probably a first round pick and a prospect, or even a Gardiner/Schenn type guy and a a 1st.
But those last 5 years at 5.5 are just horrendous. The value of 5.5 of cap from 2017 to 2022...... I'm sorry but I don't see how that is a tradeable commodity. Not now.
Not after teams have seen these deals go sour.
Not after Depietro.
Not after Lecavalier
Not after... well Luongo in vancouver.
These last 5 years on this contract severely take away from Luongos trade value.
To see the point of view think about this.
Forget names. Forget Luongo for a second.
If you could trade pure futures.
If you could trade 5 years of 5.5mil (Basically 10% of your cap) of future cap space to another team what is that worth to you in return?
For me I would want back at least a "Gardiner/Schenn type guy and a a 1st" in return for these futures if not more.

That is why I said Lecavlier+. Connolly almost has to come back.
Montreal wants nothing to do with Leclavlier and his contract. They learned the hard way with Gomez. They will take Grigorenko or Galenyuk with the third overall and be more than satisfied. That teams about to be blown up.
