he remained on becasue of his contract but the word at the time was that Gainey shoved him aside. When he left I believe it was for and assistant-coaching gig and when people asked him why he'd go from front-office to assistant coach he said there was no point in staying in a job where he was never asked for input nor was the input he volunteered ever listened to.

Gaineys five year plan culminated 1 year early, it was unsuccessful in the Post season, but he still built a first place team in 4 years, and then panicked after the (5th year) centennial and blew it all up for UFA's.
