Some folks, including Kerry Fraser (an official I have always appreciated and respected because he is generally good and fair), have been making noise about the Ward goal (and alleged Knuble interference on Thomas) that clinched the series for Washington. I've watched the goal several times now and I think that is a good non-call. Fraser (and others) think it is interference. Knuble does make contact with Thomas, but it is as he goes after the rebound on his initial shot. He doesn't just run Thomas over and the contact was pretty incidental. Thomas barely moves backwards as a result of Knuble's presence. It was a bump of the sort that happens all the time around the crease. Knuble just misses the rebound (it goes under the heel of his stick blade) and then Ward was in the right place at the right time to pop it home. It was a bang, bang sequence, but Knuble has every right to be there going after that rebound. If you're going to call goalie interference on that, then you are going to be calling interference on about 90% of the shots that happen around the crease. Sorry Kerry, you've got sweet hair and all but that is a good non-call.

Ward Goal:

i have a bit of a problem with it. knuble's leg/skate push thomas backwards - not on purpose - but it happened nevertheless and i believe that interfered with him being able to make a save on the rebound. what's mind boggling is that these dopey refs call a penalty every time an opposition player bumps or falls on the goalie when he's checked from behind, yet they fail in this instance. shouldn't have been a penalty, but i understand the argument for waiving off the goal. it happened last night in the NJ game, and disallowed the panthers' first goal and penalized them in the process. idiots.

i thought it was a good non call. it looked to me that knuble did make a good effort to avoid or atleast minimize contact with the goalie.

i think it was interference-ish and should be called just like it would have in the regular season. having said that, Thomas locks his arm around Knuble and his attention is drawn to preventing Knuble from making a play. If he didn't do that, he can make the save on Ward. I blame Thomas. Because I don't like him or anyone on the Bruins. Plus, maybe it's the Caps getting some luck after what happened to them on the Thoresen/Kapanen goal.

I think it was close enough that no matter which call was made, it would have been a valid one.

He does push Thomas but if anything, doesn't it put THomas in a better position to stop the shot from Ward?It seems like if Knuble doesn't push him, Thomas would be higher in the slot and a more wider opening would have been there for Ward.

I know you are coming at it from a goalie's perspective. If I was Thomas, I'd be pissed. Hell I was pissed a few years back when Crosby got that goal on Biron when he basically slid into the net with the puck. Biron's ability of make a play was clearly impeded there. Having said that I don't see how they can start calling stuff like the Ward/Knuble situation without basically turning the game into something NBA-like around the crease. If there is no penalty, but they waive off the goal I'd like to hear them try to explain that. That would be hilarious. Even more so if it was a playoff or series clinching goal by the home team getting waived off.

I have a problem when the NHL officials call interference for certain goalies and not for others. I've seen it this year in the playoffs where goalies are touched and theres no call when theres suppose to be. Too inconsistent for my liking.

I just watched the Stevens-Lindros hit from Game 7 back in 00.

Hopefully our revenge will be never letting them beat us in the playoffs again.

I predict sweep.
