Buddy nix also said C.J. spiller was "the best player available". Then last year when he finally started performing on the field late last year he wasn't given consistent carries when people thought he should have. Nix's answer to that was "well he's not an every down kinda of guy". So the best player available at number 9 cant even handle starter playing time?
Aaron Williams and Gilmore combined has proven absolutley nothing in the NFL yet. How anyone could think we have a top secondary based these two is completely unfounded. - Buffalo--Sabres
Top secondary? What? I dunno who, if anyone, is claiming that, but Im certainly not.
"best player available" didn't come out of nix's mouth either, if that makes it any easier to swallow. Most third party things I've read/seen have called it a pick based on talent rather then need. Basically saying he was the best player available.
I believe it's merely a good pick. Not the biggest steal ever, nor a for sure future pro bowler. Merely a good, smart pick. Certainly not a bust.

Buddy nix 4/18/12
"We’re going to take the best player available regardless of position, but we hope to get a few corners in the second or fourth too."
"There are some obvious deficiencies that do need to be addressed through the draft, but the talent available when the Bills are on the board may push Buddy Nix to take the best player, rather than the player who best meets the needs of the team"
I dont think its the worst thing ever, I just dont think not as sexy of a pick as others make it out to be. Hence my jersey comment. If its so awesome, drop $125 and wear it on your back. Not you individually, but I highly doubt the Bills store will be flooded with new Jersey requests for Gilmore.

thats not really fair. its unlikely you'll get anyone at the tenth pick thats just going to blow everyone away. i dont know if any intelligent football fan goes out and plops down 125 dollars on any 10th pick.
you're also making it seem that you can't think its a good pick, without "wearing it on your back". Last years first round pick was a unanimous good choice, but thats the exception, not the rule.
like i said i thought it was a strong pick. it addressed a need, maybe not one as major as the offensive line, but given the players in this years draft i think it was an intelligent choice.
regardless of how nix feels, i was only trying to illustrate that parties outside of the organization saw it that way, it wasn't nix and only nix swearing by it.
i'm certainly not calling it a "sexy" pick. i dont expect this guy to be out of this world crazy good, i merely thought that, in my opinion, it was the best pick given the options.

I can't pretend to know much about the guy we picked, I dont watch much college football. All I ask is that the damn guy be capable of being a regular starter right off the bat. Is that too much to ask out of a #10 overall pick?

no...especially with what those corners now have in front of them

yup, i'm with you on kuechly...one of the first things that came to mind was the '83 nhl draft when yzerman was plucked one spot ahead of the sabres - b0s0o1
We just need to find some starting players in the next few rounds hopefully (2nd round specifically). Bills need defensive depth, and they need it bad. Also mix in a WR who can get some playing time. They do that, and I like them moving forward for next year. Contrary to belief their offensive line was pretty OK last year. Had the leading rusher for a long time before Jackson got hurt and a 4,000 yard passer. They were so inept on defense.

mario williams (and mark anderson) changed everything for the team...they didn't need to take a flyer on a defensive end in the first round...it allowed them to go for a position of need and (in their minds) the best player available for them...
gailey's schemes hide offensive line weaknesses and they also make a wr less of an immediate need...
the bills were hurt by lack of depth last season...the draft should take care of that for the most part

it has to be wr or o line unless the te from stanford or upshaw is there - homiedclown
yeah, you'd think that...
*shrugs*
good chance that all of them will be gone by the time the bills pick...and from #41 through the third round, there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference in the players available
Without trading up, the first 9 picks went as bad as they could for the Bills. Their hands were tied. - Gunner Staal
my guess was they were figuring that there was 4 guys they liked and expected 2 of them to be there
the safety and lb were gone so it came down to gilmore or the notre dame wr

gilmore was the safe pick - homiedclown
I am glad they went with defense and not WR. They can find a decent receiver in round 2 if they really want.
