Hard to keep getting impact players when you always draft in the 20's.. They have historically done a good job of drafting replacements but it will be very difficult to replace Lidstrom, Zetterburg etc when they go.
- RENATO6

They will replace Lidstrom with Suter and be set for another 10 years.

Well, to be fair, we can't know who the BEST candidate is without the benefit of plenty of hindsight. I did say he was the best "in my opinion".

And who the (frank) is suggesting Jennifer Botterill?

- 3M

Truthfully he'd have been my first choice to for every reason you said, but i also know I have no clue.

How many first or second round picks on their team? It hasn't seemed to matter and it's one of the few places we've seen players take less to sign in.

Bob Gainey's resume wasn't better than Botterill's

That's where I stopped reading.

Well, I'm glad they at least spoke with him. It's more than they did with Yzerman before hand picking Gauthier.

That would not be fair... heard that Suter and Parise are a package.. ala Kariya and Selanne... don't know how true that is and who could make $13-15 million available in the cap.

Yup but very early, we will see how they do when called up. Detroit has been very good for so long because they had a stable nucleus, that is now old.. we will see how they are able to continue while replacing them, it will be interesting.
- RENATO6

They were old before, Yzerman, Fedorov, Shanahan...then they got younger when those guys were complemented by Datsyuk and Zetterberg and Fransen...

The problem now is that Lidstrom is old...and might be retiring. Holmstrom is done...Cleary is old too, and probably finished...

They should have moved a few veterans in the last year or so...

I skimmed slightly further down. I stopped when I got to Vicky Sunohara.

It's amazing how big of a cluster (frank) Gauthier was. It would be interesting to know how he ended up on Gainey's staff, they don't seem to have a history.

One of my biggest concerns about the next GM isn't so much about who it is, but who they bring in with them.

True... I do think that a lot of the success has to do with the system they play. They are very disciplined and know where the other players are. As a result, they hold onto the puck really well. They are able to play this system because of the stability of their core players that have been there 10+ years. When those players (esp Lidstrom) leave will they still be able to play that system? Perhaps.

Bob Gainey's resume wasn't better than Botterill's, only he played in the NHL, while she was played at the highest level of competition in the women's game.

Yeah. My biggest concern is that it will ultimately be someone with relatively little front office experience, who has an equally limited professional network of contacts, that will be hard-pressed to assemble a good management team.

I can't bring myself to click on the link again, but what are the odds that the author is either:

a) a female; and/or
b) related to Jennifer Botterill?
