He's been AGM in Detroit for 14 years. They have won what...3 Cups in that time? Look at their draft history. Look at their competitiveness.

Whether he was the guy responsible or not, he has been around enough success that he probably knows how to get poop done.

Yeah. How serious they actually were about an anglo GM though, is still unclear.

They have been very successful... but they haven't had an impact draft pick since 2004... Their core has been around since late 90s so it was in place when he started.

Not saying he wouldn't be good but you can't assume he will be great because of the situation he can from.

They shelter their picks unlike 90% of the teams. Brendan Smith showed amazing play in his call-up. Gustav Nyquist looked good. Tomas Tatar almost ready.

McKenzie said the other day he wouldn't be surprised if he never became a GM unless it's in Detroit.

None of this changes the fact that he knows how to get poop done. Whether he knows how (or wants to know how) to get poop done outside of Detroit is another matter.

Yup but very early, we will see how they do when called up. Detroit has been very good for so long because they had a stable nucleus, that is now old.. we will see how they are able to continue while replacing them, it will be interesting.

I was more disagreeing with your assertion that the conversation was a formality to ensure that neither party was interested.

They do an amazing job of not letting their own good picks leave. You look at their draft record and it's actually very interesting.

I didn't suggest he'd be great. I said he was the best available (emphasis on the past-tense), and that he knows how to get poop done.

Jim: M'eh.

Serge: Do me a favour, we both know you're not interested and in truth neither are we, but do you think you could say you're declining the job at this time? Merci.

I think they are both interested. At one point Holland will decide if he wants to stay .. he is only 56 if he plans to be around for a long time I can't see Nill staying there.

Quite interesting. Lots of players they draft never get a sniff of the NHL. Of course, it could be due to the fact that the ones who do make the NHL stay there for 400+ games.

I was half kidding.

I still don't think we know he's the best candidate any more than a number of the other guys. Montreal is probably ending up with someone who has a limited track record and we have no clue who the best is.
Some people are even throwing out names like Jennifer Botterill.

I do agree that he seems/seemed like a great option. It would be interested to see who they have called. I would not be surprised to hear that a few more candidates became available after the 1st round.

Hard to keep getting impact players when you always draft in the 20's.. They have historically done a good job of drafting replacements but it will be very difficult to replace Lidstrom, Zetterburg etc when they go.

Well, to be fair, we can't know who the BEST candidate is without the benefit of plenty of hindsight. I did say he was the best "in my opinion".

And who the (frank) is suggesting Jennifer Botterill?
