Maybe at first I was up for the Leafs going after Nash, but at this point it would probably hurt more than help. Just can't afford to add that high of a cap hit. If they do, it means at least losing one of Kessel or Lupul to free agency. Nash just costs way too much and while adding another winger would been a nice luxury, it isn't the most pressing thing. Unless Lupul or Kessel are in the deal itself it just doesn't happen.

Don't have that much hope for free agency either. Usually nets the Leafs nothing, but overpaid guys who aren't worth it.

Just use the pick, draft smart, and get rid of the useless bits.

Parise - American - fits Burke's requirements.
Nash - Big power forward - fits Burke's requirements.

17 players on their roster next year chewing up ~57 million in payroll.

Makes no sense.

In a perfect world, Burke trades some big salary people, but to get a Nash, you're going to lose some people like Gardiner not Komisarek.

If you assume that teams won't be able to bury oversized cap hits in the minors, have no free buy outs, and no cap trading under the next CBA, then it doesn't make sense.

Wouldn't count on there not being an out somewhere for large market teams though, especially with the small market ones holding both hands out like Oliver Twist asking for more revenue sharing.

no top notch UFA is going Toronto. AKA Parise. He wants to sign on with a winner. every year it's the same song and dance. nobody but old used up vets or guys that they over pay will go there.
- Sam67

Greatest post! "Loser talk" should be relegated till after all the playoffs have concluded, and a cup winner is crowned. Again, same old wishful thinking, lame "We're gettin good, fast" bullcrap...

Toronto...irrelevant.

In Nashs 9 year career he has played with nobodys. His second best player when he won the Rocket was Vborny (sp?) everyone brings up his average numbers without bringing up the fact he has played with no one. What do you expect the guy to do? put him with real players and he will be a beast... There is no way around that.. Sure his cap hit is high, But we woul be bringing in a much needed power forward and a guy who can snipe 40 goals.. Why is this even in debate?

Lol, you guys act like you have to apologize for trade, free agent, and roster speculation. Have you been so cowed by non Leaf fans out there that your balls have receeded to your navels.

This is a hockey rumour site, report them, spread them, make them up, assemble rosters you'd like to see and post them. If Shabbie or Cannot fans gets their panties in a jumble over it they can go (frank) themselves.

We're Leaf fans, never apologize for that.

5th overall 2012, 1st rounder 2013, 2nd rounder 2013, Reimer, MacArthur, Kulemin, Blacker, Ashton, Brenner, Percy, D'Amigo, Rynnas, Komisarek, Connolly, Armstrong, Lombardi. More than enough to make those two trades.
- The Shrike

Burke already got burned trading 1st round picks, he won't trade them again and has stated so already. And he would be a fool to trade those picks regardless, especially with the chance to pick top 5 this and next year to get the center he wants

No one will take Komi, Connelly, Armstrong, or Lombardi.

The rest could not get you anything close to Nash or Loungo. Or any top 6 forwards, top 4 D or starting goalie.

Nothing wrong behind our blueline that a number one goalie won't cure, or at least one that hasn't had his head nearly severed by a cheapshot.

No goalie in the NHL today could make the D look any good.

Sorry, I don't speak dead languages.

No, but you speak dead ideas... the same kind the Leafs have followed over and over to just fail.

You fit in very well.

any guess what Nikolai Kulemin will want? After a bad season he does not have that much power to leverage

The thing is, what is it that Toronto has that other teams want? The 5th overall, Gardiner, Kadri, Colbourne? It might take all of that just to get Nash out of Columbus. Then what's left over to use for further transactions?

I guess Burke could trade the vets, I'm sure there are teams that would like to acquire phaneuf, kessel, liles, or lupul but I thought he wants to be in the playoffs sooner than later (not that its working).

How about that UFA target? Could it be Suter? Would he trade for an RFA like Weber?

- kelholtz

Why does everyone underrate the Leafs assets?
Kadri, Gardner, colbourne and 5th for NASH? Ridiculous!
Why would anyone offer taht much for an $8 million cap hit?
Money has to go back.
Burke is not mentally chalenged.
The Leafs will put together a package for NASH and it will be a take it or leave it thing.
And if it includes 2 of the aforementioned players, consider CBJ the winners of that trade,
