Doug Wilson has already proven he knows how to draft, he just needs to keep his picks and ditch the vets.
check out his record:
2003: Michalek (6), Bernier (16), Carle (47), Pavelski (205)
2004: Greiss (94), Mitchell (126)
2005: Setoguchi (8), Vlasic (35), Joslin (149)
2006: Wishart (16), McGinn (36)
2007: Couture (9), Petrecki (28), Bonino (173)
2008: Demers (186)
2009: Doherty (57)
2010: Coyle (28), Hamilton (129)
and these are just the guys I recognize! Could be plenty more I don't know of who look good - look at his first round pick record when he has one, I'd say Michalek, Setoguchi, Wishart, Couture, Coyle are all looking like current or future impact players (top 6 forward or top 4 D at least). May not sound that impressive, but it really is - and he traded four of them for expensive underacheiving vets! tragic, is what it is.
He just needs to turn the corner on the vets and add to the stable of prospects. - TommyDeVito
Note to self: This is not an impressive list, and there is a reason why "The Hockey News", has the Sharks prospect pool ranked 30th of 30 teams. |

100% agreed. This core has been together long enough that they should have already accomplished something by now. They're on the verge of slowly turning into the Calgary Flames...continuously thinking they're that one piece away from making the jump yet they seem to end up with the same results give or take in the end.
It's a shame, a few years ago people were cheering this team on to win the cup...now they're more like that team that you know isn't going to make it because they never do and you just wait for them to get knocked out.
Trade Thornton, Marleau, Havlat and Niemi while you can still get something decent and not be stuck with crappy contracts.
Burke's not running the team so you know the rebuild should go fairly smooth. - Juice
I think it's time to trade Joe Thornton. The Sharks haven't gotten far enough in the post season with this core that's been together for a while. Trade him to a team that hasn't been to the playoffs in a while, like Toronto or the Islanders. Just an idea but Frans Nielson, Kyle Okposo and a pick for Joe Thornton. I think that would make both teams better. And Lord knows the Maple Leafs would kill for his services. They looked AWFUL this year!

Actually it's a VERY impressive list, but it becomes a whole lot less impressive when you realize that every good player or prospect in there has either made the sharks already (Couture+Pavelski) or been traded away (Seto, Coyle, Wishart, Michalek).
If all those guys were still on the farm you wouldn't be ranked 30th. |

This season has been a dissappointment. Even if they make it out of this round and on for 1 or 2 more its a bad bad bad season full of head up the rear hockey.
I wish I could be in the locker room and hear what the players are really saying. Something has to have been way off for the whole season. I am kinda excited to see this season end and watch what happens. |

The Canucks are headed down this path, time for changes this summer for both teams! - LeftCoaster
As are the Red Wings... they have to retool this summer. Time for a few of the old goats to either retire or move on. They have $20 million under the cap to work with (assuming Lidstrom retires). Ken Holland and company are great at drafting and developing talent (even the really late round picks). But he can be too loyal to the veterans to a fault. The Wings have some great prospects in their system but some are still a few years away from being ready. |

I will be very disappointed if either one of them doesn't end his career as a Shark, especially Pavs. - IntotheTeal
There's no denying Pavs was on fire the first two rounds last playoffs but it seems when he's actually targeted as a threat he's apparently fairly easy to contain...pointless in 4 games?
I usually defend Marleau but there's no denying it this series: he's been invisible which is aggravating considering his skill level. |

It's a shame that the no talent cheap shot artist with "cracked shoulder pads" couldn't even scratch the line up, while Andy Mac continues to dominate. |

I wouldn't say anything about the Sharks until the Kings close this out. We're not home free by any means.
