I love to see a goalie get smacked when they are out, but I don't think they should be fair game in that trapezoid. This isn't like years ago where goalies would be in the corner every dump or come out to the top of the circle to play the puck. They have limited space and I think they shouldn't be a target when in it, out of it is fair game for me.

First sensible, non-blinded by homerism post in this thread, took me two pages to find it. First two-three pages are just angry fans who've either had a guy suspended or have seen an opposing player not suspended.
Shanahan is doing what everyone has always done before him - if you're a star, you get less than what you deserve, if you're a role player, you get more than you deserve.
To me, the only error he has made so far is only giving Neal one game, he should be out for two, one for each attempted killshot.
Weber giving Zetterberg a little ouchie on his delicate face is not worthy of a suspension. It would do no more damage than punching a guy in the face, and that would only be a roughing penalty.
Shaw maybe didn't deserve three games, but it was a clear message sent to everyone else - run the goalie and you're gone. To anyone comparing this to the Lucic incident, you're a total idiot. Smith was in his trapezoid, where the goalie is permitted to play the puck without being run over, and Shaw specifically leaned his body into Smith's head. It was comPLETEly intentional and deserved a suspension, whether or not it got called. Now, if Smith wants to skate out to the hashmarks and gets run over in a race for the puck, I say fair game. But a shot to the head inside the Crease or Trapezoid is worth a suspension.
Great job on the Hagelin, Backstrom and Asham suspensions.
Pretty clear precedents being set here:
- Crosschecks to the face will be suspended harshly.
- Elbows to the head will be suspended harshly.
- Blatant attempts to check a players head at speed will be suspended.
- Running a goalie in his crease or trapezoid will be suspended.
- over the top roughness will get a fine for the first offence, likely a suspension for the second (just a guess here, but if Weber stepped out of line again I think he'd sit for a game.)
I don't see what's so confusing about the guidelines, aside from everyone thinking their guy deserves less than the other guy.
