Surprised at all the outrage on the Shaw suspension. Seemed pretty cut and dried. I'm not a big fan of the "you can't touch the goalie, even when he's out of the crease" rule, but that's the current rule. Shaw clearly broke it, and not only that he did so in a way that his principal point of contact was the goalies head.

Hitting the goalie, even a little, when he's playing the puck behind the net has never been allowed. In this case Shaw almost decapitated him. I fully expected him to get 2 - 3 games.

Again, I don't like that rule, but until they change it you can't just plow into the goalie when he's behind the net. Especially (either intentionally or accidentally) when you target his head.

my opinion is the opposite. he had no room to skate around their goalie. i think he deserved a 2 minute minor for goalie interference and nothing more[/img]

just saying its possible bro

players have learned that the league pays much more attention to cheapshots when they appear to have an effect on a players health

even if its for only a moment or a shift

Who are the "goons"? The only pure goon I can think of is Macintyre and he has not dressed in the playoffs.
- PT21

engelland, adams, vitale, cooke (at the time of the comment by le-puke), asham is a pure goon. basically their bottom 6 forwards, plus neal with malkin and crybaby running around starting poop

edit: i'm aware engelland is a defenseman

Mario has expressed disappointment (but not on the record) in his team today for their showing on Sunday. Maybe he's thinking he should at least pay lip service to being consistent with his criticism of LI last season.

I respect Mario, but he should come out with a statement ... not just "let his disappointment be known" through team sources.

Well, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but it is inconsistent with the rule. There is no part of the rule that says "don't hit the goalie, unless there is no room to skate around him - then it's fine".

And again, he hit him directly in the head. Whether he meant to do that or not is not really relevant. With the rules as they are, there is no way he wasn't getting multiple games for that play.

EDIT - and when I say "no way", I obviously mean "no way for a guy named Shaw not to get multiple games". If his name was say, Webber, then it's probably not even a penalty.

I did not just send an email to Glen all in caps on this. I used caps and lower case. But I was yelling in my head.

Hey has anyone heard anything on discipline for those Pens guys? You know Neal and Asham. I heard they are in trouble. Any news? Huh? HUH?

he was trying to avoid any and all contact. if you don't have room to go around someone a collision is unavoidable. he tried but the goalie game him no room. it's not like i'm saying it's in the rule book, i'm saying it's a major mitigating factor. ask a blackhawks fan

Per TSN: 20 games for Asham and a $75 fine for Neal.

None of those guys are goons. You must be joking. Cooke was a dirty player, as opposed to a goon. He has (under pressure) been pretty clean this season and note that he held his temper in all of this.

James Neal comes in at 87 PIM in 80 games this year, the most of all the Pens. Thats not much for a team chockful of goons.

Privileged, arrogant, complaining with blubbering lips -ok. Goonery, umm no.

So, if there's no room to skate around the goalie, you have to stop. There's no way to mitigate what Shaw did. He didn't have to go crashing in there and he certainly was not trying to avoid 'any and all contact'. He was out of control, couldn't stop, and wound up cracking the goalie in the head. He may not have set out to do that, but he did it. Pretty much game over at that point, unless your name is Webber. If your name is Shaw, you're a goner in that scenario.

As for the 'Hawks fans, I'm sure they're pissed. But if Vitale does the same thing to Bryz tomorrow night, are you telling me you'd be okay with just a 2 minute penalty? I think not.

Imagine the conspiracy conversation on that, and the 20 year history in which the Flyers have been screwed by the League.

there was NO intent behind shaw's actions. he wasn't out of control he was skating hard, playing hockey not targetting a defenseless goalie. he couldn't stop he was skating too fast. i've seen that kind of play a million times and the first 999.999 times the goalie got out of the way or didn't take up the whole entire space.

A goon is typically a player who is basically in the League because of his toughness and fighting ability. Neal being a goal scorer, and a 40 goal scorer at that. Eliminates him from the goon label.
