First game was Amazinggggggg! This and the Pits vs. Philly series are the best!

Really? It was frustrating to watch; I can only imagine what it was like to actually play, with 17 (17!!!) penalties called amongst the two least-penalized teams in the league. Here's hoping for a different zebra crew tonight!!

Chill out, chica. Paul brought it up, and denounced it as 'silly whining.' I was trying to show there's actually a reasonable and logical reason why people are questioning the decision.

I think most of us here agree with you, however, we can't help but look back at incidents such as Hossa boarding Hamhuis a couple of years ago and getting nothing for it, even after Hamhuis had to leave the game. The NHL is inconsistent at best.

Not only does this set a bad precedent going forward, but it may lead to something ugly tonight or further on in the series as a retaliation. It might also lead to players embellishing their injuries in order to draw that suspension since the physical state of the victim is a consideration.

They need to review their process. That's for sure.

And they need to do one of two things
1) Either get rid of the physical state of the victim - i.e. An illegal hit is simply illegal regardless of injury. Develop a chart of illegal actions - headshot = 3-5 games, intent to injure = 10-20 games, etc. League reserves the right to increase suspension in extreme cases - see Bertuzzi, Moore incident.
OR
2) Make the physical state the only thing that matters - i.e. you are suspended as long as the player is hurt.

I personally don't like option 2 but if injuries are going to be a factor, then why not use something like this.

My opinion is that option 1 is the better judgement system and then suspensions will become clearer as they are handed out. I believe this is what the NHL is trying to accomplish, but throwing in the state of the victim is just screwing everything up. After all, people can get injured by falling wrong even if the hit was legal.

Any update on Gill? If he plays tonight the wings power play won't be 33% again.

I didn't like Zetterberg's run on Weber. I didn't like Bertuzzi's antics either. I think Weber should have sat a game for his play against Zetterberg, even though some of the demonization of this has gotten out of hand.

The NHL didn't see it as a suspension. I don't agree with how they come up with the punishment; the reasoning that the severity of the player being injured dictating the severity of the suspension/fine doesn't make sense. Punish the act not the result.

But the vitrol of this needs to chill. There is a game tonight and a series to play. All we can hope for in the upcoming CBA is that this kind of thing is addressed.

I hope we can all get back to talking about the games - everyone has made their opinions abundantly clear by now.

Totally agree with you. The lack of suspension (or penalty, for that matter) was an absolute JOKE. Turned the series. You guys had your foot on Chicago's throat.

It won't get ugly tonight. The Wings don't get involved in retaliation type stuff in the postseason. Their MO is to let a road victory be the retaliation. That's what they're focusing on. It may get a little chippy tonight, but pretty normal, playoff stuff, I'm guessing. Unless Weber decides he can afford another $2,500 and go for a DDT or sleeper hold... I kid, I kid!!

I understand the viewpoint on Shannahan's 1 game = 12 reg season games. But I don't agree with him on it because by his numbers he just suspended Byron Bitz for 24 regular season games. As a comepletly unbiased fan toward these two teams, I think there should have been a suspension for one game because it sets a bad precedent of a play like that should only end up being a fine in the future, and it was a reckless play involving someone's head.

Looking foreword to watching both of these two great teams play tonight, thanks to NBC carrying every game.

- GSDIV

Yeah, what Bitz did but not more than 12 games bad. And since no one gets 12+ game suspensions in the regular season, you'd have to damn near kill a guy to get a game int he playoffs.

The formula just doesn't work at all. Weber should have gotten a game for being stupid and careless.

If being stupid was a suspendable offense, how would the Dallas Stars ever put a team on the ice!

If Detroit doesn't score tonight while we are on KleinFense, our chances are great.

We win tonight, we take the series in 5 games.

Actually that was the only Qualm I had, just let the boys play. But It was a great game to see, lot's of hitting, fast paced and dirty goals. Rinne and Howard were great to watch.

Oh also instead of speaking Espanol just speak thug and say 'gurl'

Sorry man, the wings don't go down in 5... they just don't you could be up 3 games to one and I would still think the series goes to 6 games or 7.

That being said I have predicted the Preds winning this in 7 for days now. I hope they go far.

They won't be putting a team on the ice until September, so there may be something to that.

Weber is officially a verb now? YES!

weber
verb (used with object)
1.
to break to pieces with violence and often with a crashing sound, as by striking, letting fall, or dashing against something; shatter: He webered the head against the glass.
2.
to hit or strike (someone or something) with force.
3.
to overthrow or destroy something considered as harmful: They webered the Red Wings player head.

Heard it described best the other day, "NHL discipline is predictable in its unpredictability". For the most part Shannahan has been pretty good, but definitely dropped the ball on a few. Pretty thankless job, guaranteed there will always be someone who doesn't agree with the decision made.

This is what needs to happen. Taking injury into account sends the wrong message entirely, and likely leads to teams lying about the severity of injuries.

Anyway, enough about the controversy, hopefully it's a good one tonight with more even strength play. Can't wait!

What do you think Shanny would have given Rome in the SCF last year? I think he would have been pretty hard pressed to give Rome his equivalent of a 36 game suspension. I believe he came up with this formula specifically as a way to dance around giving a multiple-game suspension to 'important' players.
