Good point.. But wasnt valabik on the ground?

Good'ole Boris.

- jak521

Not at the point Crosby punched him. More egregious than the hit to the back of Valabik's pants was the fact that Crosby was the third man in and delivered a punch to the vulnerable player's head.

Exactly my point.

Yep, we missed that call. We've missed calls in the past. We're going to miss calls in the future. It happens. We'll strive for perfection in game officiation, despite knowing that it's not a possibility.

- Jsaquella

He was trying to make the Pens feel better. Dont worry we wont miss anymore calls. Did he apologize to the Flyers for the icing call that turned into a goal?

agreed

deal with the linesman, don't come out and get upset about one of several blown calls

- Don'tForgetTocchet

Yep. Why even acknowledge one blown call?

i'd love to know the reasoning, never seen them do anything like that ever before.

for instance no comment was made about clowe playing the puck from the bench which i think should have been addressed by the league.

No. Which is why he shouldn't apologize for ANY blown calls. Refs are human. They make errors.

I have zero idea why they addressed that particular call and am far too scared to try to understand the NHL's logic

It's part of the game. I have zero issue with what Crosby did there. It's part of what makes him great. Do anything within reason to win. Flyers should do the same.

Boy am I glad I disagree with you here.

Good morning all. Congrats on Wednesday night's win. Well deserved.

I find it amusing that after such a big win, most of the chatter in here is still about a "blown" icing call.

Considering One linesman (the closer one) waved it off and the other didn't; it was a judgement call and not clear cut. I think the old axiom of playing to the whistle holds true here. It was a 50/50 puck in the corner, and the Flyers D allowed the smallest Penguin on the roster to dig the puck out of the corner and set up the goal.

We keep hearing the last few weeks about how the Pens are whiners and complainers, but there was barely a peep from them about the offsides call, which lets face it, was egregious and they would have been well within their rights to make a huge stink about it. I can only imagine what this forum would have said if the calls we "on the other foot"...of if it occured against a certain Penguins opponent coached by one John Tortorella (imagine THAT post game press conference!)

Anyways, game 2 can't get here fast enough. Look for me, I'll be the guy in the Penguins sweater (although I wish I had a bear suit )

Absolutely. The players decided the outcome of the game the other night. Its ridiculous that the NHL would even comment on that call and not on the icing call. Lets cater to the Pens organization, its a joke.

The Flyers never tried to turn the game into the bloodbath that Hartnell predicted in the days before it began. They simply marched back, shift by shift. When Daniel Brière was crushed by Brooks Orpik midway through the third, it looked like tempers might rise. They didn’t.

“When he got hit there on the power play we got, he was just kind of laughing,” Hartnell said. “I was on the ice there, I was going to go after them, and he said, ‘Hartsy, it’s all right. We’ll score on this power play.’ And we did. It was awesome.”

I think the key to tonight's game is not to try and "weather" the Penguins storm. What got them in trouble was allowing Pittsburgh to dictate play in the first last game. The Flyers were settling for just getting the puck out of the defensive zone and getting the correct match-ups on the ice in the first period of the last game... It resulted in easy defensive outs for Pittsburgh and way to much puck control. When that happens, it's only a matter of time until Pittsburgh makes you pay.

I say dont try and "weather" a storm, throw the storm right back at em. If that means you have to play a little aggressive on offense, and less aggressive on defense, so be it. If the Flyers are playing aggressively then the Penguins cant play with as much puck control, and that should lead to another Flyers win.

The NHL cant apologize to one team and not another during a playoff series, thats a joke and looks bad. Especially when the mistakes went both ways.

if the offside wasn't still a topic in the media there would be no mention of the icing situation.

My issue with the icing call is that the closer linesman-the same one that blew the offsides call on the Briere goal-waived it off after Coburn had passed him. Coburn had no idea it was waved off, because the linesman was behind him and he was about five feet from the end boards.

Waiting that long to wave an icing off opens the door to issues.

The other aspect is, while the Pens themselves have dismissed the off sides call, the media hasn't and the NHL is apologizing for it. Kind of hard not to get a little defensive when you have national media AND the league stirring the pot and ignoring a questionable call the other way.

we are upset that the NHL came out and apologized and acknowledge THAT wrong call and not the icing, when it was the same linesmen. That's why we're annoyed. Also, will we hear an apology for the too many men that led to a Phoenix goal? probably not. Pens whine and dive during the game, afterwards, they pretend to be men.

I wish the NHL would also apoligize to the Flyers for the embellishment of Crosby. Thats a disgrace that the best player in the world acts like a four year old on skates when hes touched.

Fair point, but if you don't KNOW its going to be icing, shouldn't you be making a hard play on the puck and not make any assumptions? It just wasn't a clear cut play.

Anyways, my primary point is that for all the comments about the Pens being whiners, I think they have been remarkably restrained about the offsides issue. They can't control what Campbell says or does, nor can they control the media (despite what the tin foil hat brigade might say).

If the refs give you calls when you embellish and don't penalize you for it, then you're a moron if you stop embellishing.
