Not going to happen.
- MJL

Seriously, why not?

The exemption was a rumor. Was it shot down?

It's been said they may not bail teams out of bad contracts in the next CBA, they can't expect it to happen.

If it comes right down to it, with the signings of Coburn and Grossmann, finding a way to keep Carle is more important than ever. I'd be willing to move Meszaros to fit Carle.

You may have trouble finding a trade partner for Meszaros with the back issues.

No, but who knows how things will go once talks begin. Anything is possible but don't bank on it.

MAB is def a more suitable replacement to Mez, than to Carle IMO. He's like a Mez-lite right now. I agree with you.

It's not about how we'll operate. It's about how the Flyers will operate. When will they know if Pronger is going to play next year or not? By the draft? By July 1?
- MJL

By the end of the lockout.

That'd be the biggest worry. My preference is to keep a top 5 of Timonen, Coburn, Carle, Grossmann & Meszaros.

I'd like to have MAB or Gus as the 6th guy next year, with Lilja as the spare guy/7th.

I'd have to let Jagr go and plug in Wellwood somewhere rather than move Mesz. Provided, of course, he has no issues with his back.

That's certainly an option, too. Jagr's done as well as could be expected. But the age is a concern, as are the random injuries to his legs

Homer will do a good job if replacing Carle. Will see what happens but somebody will need to be traded to fit Carle but I don't see it happening.

Who exactly are all these Carle's that are in the League, that will come cheaper? Name them. And they wouldn't be paying Carle on potential. They would be paying him based on production.

Carle is absolutely worth 5M.

- MJL

Pick any team's third defenseman - they're all Matt Carle.

You are a Carle fan.

I thought Carle could turn into a better player, but he hasn't. He never developed that ability to step into the play offensively like a guy with his skill set should have. He's a good skater, he has gotten better positionally, is an above-average passer, and he stays healthy, which is nice, but he's not a guy that regularly affects the game. His hockey sense is average, he has no physicality, shoots like a blind baby from the point, and doesn't win board battles.
I have no idea of any of Carle's numbers, or where they rank him in the league. It doesn't matter. Numbers are numbers - they don't do anything. Players do.
He doesn't make enough of a positive impact on the ice to justify the cap hit. Maybe in a fantasy league, he is really really great, but in real life...he's OK.
I'd be fine keeping him at his current cap hit.

If you think he has produced as a top 20 d-man in the league, I can only hope some other team's GM (preferably in the East) agrees with you. I would much rather play against a $5 mil Carle, than try and win a Cup with one.

He's just one player. Sometimes you lose good players but they can be replaced by others.

Agreed.
And when they have to re-sign Simmonds in a year and Giroux in two, and they already have big money committed to the D...it makes sense to not overpay here.

Carle is an above average defenseman, and that's good, but I don't believe he is worth $5 million per.

He's not that big, he's not that fast, he's soft, almost never hits, and all of his stats for the season speak to a dependable player you can usually rely on to get the job done, but who isn't elite in any particular area.

MAB (22) is Carle (27) in a couple years.

Carle is good, he's durable, but $5 million per is too high.

After signing Coburn and Grossmann it seems to me that Homer expects Carle to test free agency at this point. He's had on going talks with Carles agent and they didn't agree on years/numbers. Homer did the right thing and locked up two good defenseman. Would he like to have Carle? Probably but the number can't be outrageous cause they can't afford it at this time unless they unload a decent size contract.
