Most hockey players are down to earth and barely known in the states compared to say football or baseball players. Yes they still have the money, lots of it, but why stay in canada in the winters, freeze your nuts off, be on the front page ( see domi's really messy divorce and everything that went with it), when you could be living the life in your beach house on the ocean in the southern states, and keep 1/3 of your money that isnt going to be raped by taxes. Like i said it's a no brainer man. - Prolific_Scorer
Pretty much. Thats why the habs have to overpay for any free agent they sign. Cammy with his 6 million for example. |

I think most hockey players making 5 million a year would be happy without all the media attention. I can't think of one star player in the prime of his career decided to move to a Candian city and excelled there. Danny Briere had a option to and went to philly for less money. - cburgess
You're making the assumption its because of media. Its more likely because of money. After taxes, what was the salary diff? |

The habs have to way over pay for every UFA just to even up the taxes. On top of that i read somewhere quite a long while ago that the Canadiens as an organization pay more taxes then all of the American teams COMBINED!!!! |

There are a bunch of factors. Canadian teams have to overpay for their players to counter the media crap they are going to put up with on a day to day basis. |

Ok take the Pronger thing for instance, (frank)ing around on his wife etc. Say you are player, in a strange town, would you want to (frank)ing around on your wife where nobody had a clue who you were or what you did for your money? Or in a town like edmonton where you cant escape it and everyone knows you cause you are hockey player and the only game in town? Add in the weather factor and the taxes, and really man its a no brainer. - Prolific_Scorer
Tough call. I wouldn't doubt pronger would like to be a place where he can go around banging the local celebs vs a place where no one gives a shyt. Why did he choose a celeb after all? He easily could have chosen some random hot broad. |

So, how do you explain him reportedly coming to the ACC to try to sign with the Leafs then? He hated the spotlihght? |

Probably because they were offering 6 million while the rest of the league was around 5 |

No its not really man. Not at all. The majority of these players are from small town poopsville canada, and enjoy the wealth they have acquired, and the sun down south in the winter too, living the life with a girlfriend in every city, and its not on the front page like it would be in Canada. Most of them are awkward in front of a camera and in interviews at best. With the wealth they have acquired they can have any broad anywhere. And let me say, i like Wasaga beach in the summer, nice area, nice looking ladies in bikinis, ive been there a couple a times, but it aint (frank)ing Florida or California beaches. I dont think you are an obtuse person, i dont, but i believe you are thinking with your heart and not your mind on this topic, which is pretty much why you tease the Fefans in the misc threads. |

Leafs would have overpaid for him too. But the taxes in QC are even more insane, he got an extra mill for his efforts. Likely balanced out some of the taxes and moving costs. |

Need plenty of land to produce enough of this to run all the cars in this country, even more so for the states. It can be done, but where you gonna grow your food? - Prolific_Scorer
Using ethanol drives up the price of food (wheat, corn), that's why it is more expensive and dangerous to use, than oil. |

i'm saying they have to overpay because of the media. If the Panthers and Habs are offering Zack Parise the same amount of money, he will sign in Florida so he can hide and still collect the same paycheck. In order to get Parise into MTL, you have to pay more. So in a way its about money, but its countered with all the headaches. |

oil is the best option, but there are a lot of people saying we can't rely on it, so we were debating alternatives. |
