5.5 is a lot... seeing as how the season went, I would rather have gotten another first and kept the cap space... for our next rebuild - senstroll
top line centres make 6.5-8million
second line centres make 3-5.5million (depending on FA status)
grabo is: an upper echelon 2nd line centre who hit the perfect year for a contract
he also cares and wants to play here.. and one of the few who never mails it in.
it was a good signing.. and in todays nhl.. 5.5million for a 60 point centre in his prime is pretty damn good.. you also need to keep in mind its only a 5 years deal and not 8, 9 or even 10.

At this point, even though I love Grabo (sometimes more than others), I'd rather have another 1st round pick and Colborne centring line #2 next year at a fraction of the cap hit. Where does Colborne fit in now that we have a #2 C locked up long term?

Could you imagine the conspiracy theorists that would come out of the (frank)in woodworks if Toronto won the lottery and got 1st overall pick.........
It would be like who shot JFK all over again....... - jimdavis
Having to deal with those tinfoil hat folks would be well worth it. The 5th spot has an 8.7% chance of winning the lottery and moving up 4 spots, right? Those odds are far from astronomical.

i know all that, but by the time we can compete (if that ever happens) he will be on the back end of the contract and early 30's

well.. he fell right off with the marlies .. which tells me burke doesnt feel he is ready .. or quite possibly never will be
so instead of grabo being a tradable asset.. colborne can be.. or.. maybe they might want to try to grrom him into another role (say checking centre)
i think this summer will be very telling.. and for those who dont get moved.. the pre-season will show us what carlyle thinks of the players and where he puts them on his own depth chart.
one thing is for certain.. colborne needs to find consistency, if he doesnt.. he'll never be a full time NHL player

3rd line maybe - stevecarpetman
That only makes sense if they have the firepower to have a top 9 and then a checking/energy bottom 3. The firepower's not there, so the problem will be that he's not suited for a checking role and will be in the AHL so he can play significant minutes.
