This is my own personal opinion... If someone told me that Bryz was going to break his foot, but I would be the one to pick what type of fx and where it would be located.. i would have picked small chip fracture and minimal-weightbearing bone (toe). So I would be one fir two here.

Good news: Its a relatively simple injury. Nothing to complicated usually comes of it. Like has been said else where.. typically its a matter of pain and swelling. The body will resorb that bony fragment and in a matter of about 6 weeks, you wont be able to find in on X-ray, CT, or MRI.

Bad News: It is in a weight-bearing bone ( most likely the navicular) and is exacerbated by stressful motions. Goalies do a ton of pushing with their feet. The way the body works is amazing.. but its not always in our best personal (what we want) interest. Pain, especially when severe, can actually cause muscles to "give out". People with severe knee pain often have this manifestation. They feel knee instability, yet when examined and tested actually have no mechanism for instability. Pain can be a serious PITA.

If it were up to me I would let him rest a week.. see how much pain he is in and go from there. Completely shut him down. Dont skate, stay off of it.. let him settle down. Sometimes the area is pretty irritated, and that can cause most of the pain. Staying off of it, letting that settle, and giving it a little bit of time to begin the healing process can really help. The last thing I would like to see is him pushing it to go this weekend, and then have him limp through the playoffs.

Ultimately.. the worst we can do is go 0-7.. and potentially end up playing either Pitt or the Rags... or in a best case scenario 7-0 and potentially end up playing either Pit or the Rags... catch my drift.

Thank you.

This is what a post about an injury looks like coming from someone who doesn't just live near a facility.

I'm always looking for your insight on these orthopedic injuries.

Do what the Phils do:

Rest everybody til the playoffs, or a game or 2 beforehand. Put the Phantoms out there (if they can....not sure about their callup cap situation), play the 4th line. Give as much of a reat to the bog boys. We need them more in crunch time than what we do now, because everyone and their mother knows what the matchups will be like come the playoffs.

The worst thing that could possibly happen to this team is for someone else to go down....

Rest up fellas.

Reading this, it sounds very much like a well informed opinion based on your profession. I find it odd the Flyers announced the specifics of the injury, why didn't they proclaim this to be a lower body injury like they classify all other injuries?

Whether Bryzgalov plays again in the regular season is a moot point at this stage, the Flyers aren't catching the Penguins or Rangers. It might actually behoove the Flyers to fall to the # 6 seed at this point, try and win a series against Florida, or Washington and get some of the injured players back for Round 2.

Maybe a game for Bryzgalov to get under his belt before the playoffs start would help. I have no doubt he will play in the playoffs, the two concerns now are, 1.) he has his rhythm interrupted, (he was on a major role) and 2.) Is he less effective lateral movement wise and in general due to this injury. None of us know the answer at this point.

Simply amazes me that of all the goaltenders in the NHL, it's the Flyers goalie who this happens to on the eve of the playoffs. Unreal.

No.. but commenting on the vet thing.. a lot of times the traumatic brain issues are not a result of injuries but sensory. This poop those poor guys and girls see really messes them up. So think about that next time you see a vet and dismiss them entirely (like we all tend to do).

Fortunately.. i dont think Pronger is suffering from PTSD.

I am not a physician, but I work in sports medicine at the University of Penn.. hand in hand with 4 very respected orthopedic surgeons (including the former doc of the Nashville Preds). Over the past 4 years I have been extremely privileged (and indescribably thankful) to have learned more than I would have ever expected to learn about Ortho/sports related medical issues. I also never comment on things I am not familiar with or comfortable talking about (not a knock on you).

**ahem** Champion rec league hockey player... or as I would put it.. An MHL champion.

Won it in a sweep last night. Took a stick to the eye/cheek as payment. Great game with a win in OT.

No need to rush Bryzgalov back. Flyers seeding will not change. Get people healthy and try and improve as a team in all areas. Who knows maybe they can get survive round 1.

Dude, that's awesome. I was curious cause I recently am back in school for medicine and it's always nice to meet and speak with people that have experience or ties to the medical field. Now with that, I'm off to class.

Very true. My grandfather spent his final days in a VA hospital in Bath, NY. We visited him there pretty frequently. Some of what I saw during those visits still breaks my heart to this day. Those folks paid a very high price to service their country, and we should never forget that.

Unfortunately they all make a pretty significant sacrifice (some the ultimate) and yet never truly get the respect they should get. I have never served.. and often fall into the crowd of looking past those who have served. Seeing the effects before first hand, I am with you on the heart break.

Is it wrong I'm more concered with the Flyers playing Rags or Boston in the PO's vs Pitt???

I feel they match up better to Pitt's "style" than the physical/grinding style of the Bruins and Rags.

We should have known we get the hottest goaltender in the league going into the playoffs and BAM he gets one of those chew the inside of your cheek injuries go figure
- JoeRussomanno

That would be wrong. The Blues goaltender has been way better than your guy for the whole season....and lately.

so he has 3 shutouts this week. bryz had them last week, and has clearly been the best player this month. so what?

what happened in october, november, december, january, and feb. really doesn't mean anything right now other than the playoff seed each team has.
