Grossmann has his flaws also. What it comes down to it is what kind of player are you looking for.
- MJL

No question. Grossmann is far from perfect. I feel he is more important because the Flyers lack size and physicality that Grossmann brings to this team. The Flyers think highly of him if their using him against other teams best players such as Malkin.

I agree they have to get a player that fits what they want to do.

Wow people are ragging on Carle but no one wants to acknowledge how Danny Holds onto the puck about as good as a crack head holds onto a 10 dollar bill at times. It's ok though he scores in the playoffs.

No it doesn't. What you offered as a rebuttal is that Carle isn't as good as some of the top echelon, Norris Trophy level defenseman such as Weber, Chara, and arguably the best NHL defenseman of all time in Lidstrom. No kidding. Who has said anywhere in any opinion offered that Carle is on that level?

Just as I did in bringing the facts as far as what Carle brings to the team. I guess I now have to brings the facts as far as the NHL Salary structure and what top NHL defenseman such as Chara, Weber, Doughty, and Keith make.

And also ask what would those players be paid this off season if they were upcoming UFA's such as Carle is?

- MJL

You shouldnt have to over pay for your own UFA. If your paying Carle anywhere above 5 million, then IMO he is getting close to those players salaries. If he gets 6 million, then yes... He is getting paid like those guys... and my point in saying he isn't like those players is to point out he isnt an offensive threat from the point. When you think of offensive threat you think Buff, Lidstrom, Karlson, Doughty... Carle isnt even in the top 20 when people think of offensive threats from the point I would bet...

Like I said... He isnt a top tier guy... Maybe at the top of the 2nd tier guys, but if your a smart NHL team you dont pay those guys big money. We already made mistakes and are paying the defense too much.... I dont want to do it again.

Who on the defense is getting too much?

Look Carle had less than desirable game last night but his puck moving ability is an essential component to this team's success. He missed a wide open net I read (and did see in the game) he turns the puck over at times, but he does do a lot things like the positional play that are hard to see on the stat sheet. I agree not to overpay for him and if a team is willing to do that then adios amigo but like MJL said you are going to have a big void and better pray that someone can step in.

Danny's turnover in the neutral zone was terrible and lead to a breakaway goal by Malone.

An important question. The cost of talented defensemen, including those very top ones, goes up every year. $5m-$5.5m more than likely won't buy you #1 defensive talent anymore, that'a price of the past. Hell, Chara makes almost $7m on the cap. What's Suter going to get this summer? What'll Weber get on the market (or Nashville, they won't escape his impending value if they can sign him). That five million dollar range just isn't top defenseman value in 2012.
- BulliesPhan87

Thats correct, but the price between these top players and guys like Carle isn't far apart these days.... When the best D-man in the league is only making 1.5 million more then what Carle is asking for... You have to think long and hard about giving that to Carle. IMO you can sign both Kubina and Grossman for what you pay for Carle and the Defense would be better for it.

Hard to say who would replace Carle. However it isnt impossilbe either. I never thought a guy like Grossmann would be able to play at this level for the Flyers. Whoever replaces Carle would need the opportunity before we just say that player cant replace him because of name.

I do agree that Carle's game can be underrated at times. I put it this way his production on the ice has more positives than negatives. He has a lot more good games then bad imo.

The Flyers are going to go outside of the Organization to replace Carle if they don't retain him.

I buy into about 10 games a year. I make sure I get them when i don't have my daughter (every other week(full weeks)).
the rest of the time I am home and tied down.

Next time at a live game will be the Wheez Kids (Part Deux) on April 11th. The Phillies.

It all comes down to Money. yes they will be shedding some and they can get rid of more (Shelley) but a few players will have increases and then if they choose to resign Jagr etc...
there are no such things as hometown discount in business.

If Carle is asking for a big raise...see ya

If we go by name then they need to land Suter. I'm thinking that Homer is going to deal for a defenseman this offseason if he decides to move on from Carle.

It's not a matter of any one player getting paid too much as it is we have 4 million dollar players on the 3rd pairing when the D is healthy... You need guys making 600k-1.5 million on the 3rd pairing that can do a similiar job.

As for Carle.. I wasn't bashing him... I said he is a good player, just not elite at anything, which would want me to over pay for him, and I think anything over 5 million is over-payment. Anything over 5 million and I would rather spend the extra 1.5-2 on someone like Suter.

The Flyers cant keep everyone and that decision will have to be made by the GM. IF you lose Grossmann or Carle your going to be lacking in another area. There is no right answer but with how well our offense has played I would rather the Flyers get more defensive minded defenseman. They still will have Coburn, Timonen, Mez who can all move the puck.

So your own UFA's shouldn't get market value to resign? What is that based on?

I've already proven with facts that Carle is absolutely a threat offensively from the point. In fact Carle is one of the top offensive defenseman in scoring at ES in the NHL.
And again, I'll ask what would those players get if they were upcoming UFA's such as Carle is this off season? Would 5M a year start a conversation with the agent for Chara, Weber, etc?

Like I said... He isnt a top tier guy... Maybe at the top of the 2nd tier guys, but if your a smart NHL team you dont pay those guys big money. We already made mistakes and are paying the defense too much.... I dont want to do it again.

5M isn't top money. And I disagree. If your a smart team you absolutely pay players like Carle what they are worth.

I think if Jagr comesback its gonna have to be at what he's getting or less. If someone wants to give him 4-5 million than be my guest. Love what he's done for the team this year but he is nothing like he used to be either. Would love to see him retire here but I'd rather have a more rounded team to win a cup.
